PostHow would *you* have revealed the Wii U?

I had one of those unfortunate dire needs to go to the toilet at 5am last night. In my half-asleep, comatose state, I got wondering about how most people say Nintendo dropped the ball at their conference on Tuesday due to the amount of details that weren't revealed.

So, say you are a high up person working at Nintendo. They have just come to you saying that they are planning on revealing a new home console at E3. You have no option to refuse, and you are not able to get any 'real' game demo's finished in time to show the public. In essence, you only have the resources they had during their conference:

That is (I might have forgotten some things, but this is just for reminders):

- Zelda tech demo
- Wii U controller intro video
- The 'garden' tech demo
- The reel of 360/PS3 third party games coming to the Wii U
- The console itself (even though they didn't show it)

Lets say for the sake of this, the internal components of the console are still yet to be finalised, so you can't brag about the chipset/graphics card etc. Similarly with the on-line side of things.

In retrospect, I personally think they did an overall good job. They got millions of people on the internet talking about it and getting hyped about all the potential possibilities for power and games. I agree they could have done more to distinguish the controller and the console, and that some questions from the Reggie post-conference should have been answered there and then, but overall, after all the initial curve-balls, I reckon they did ok.

So, what say you? How would you do it?

I'd have shown it playing WiiU tech demos, rather than Wii games to start with, then bought in the "AND IT WORKS AS A SCREEN FOR THE WII YOU'VE ALREADY GOT IN YOUR HOUSE" bombshell later.

Showing the rumoured open-world Mario game of course.

Caused alot of confusion when they showed the controller first, I thought it was an add-on for the Wii until Mafro pointed out that the Wii sitting under the TV was slightly curvier.

I wouldn't have bothered revealing it at all, and instead just littered the E3 booth with them and let people have the massive surprise. Cue trailer of games and possibilities on a massive screen in the convention centre.

It's a tough job to introduce it, as it's a different concept to it's predecessor. They used Mii's to describe how the new controllers would work with simple Wii-like graphics it wasn't the best way to introduce a new console but it didn't surprise me that they used the approach that we saw, as gameplay experience takes more precedence.

They did it the best way they could.

It's early but they were forced into announcing it now. Everyone's been complaining that the Wii has no games coming and now we understand why.

I don't think anyone's debating that they shouldn't have announced it at E3. We're just debating the way that their announcement presentation could have been done better.

You say it like it's our own thought for the Wii not having any new games

I think the main problem was that it took so long for them to actually say that it was a new console. I mean, it was only when Peter Moore (was it?) mentioned developing for a new console that everyone went "Oh, it is a new Wii. That's alright then".

I'd have had that explanation of how pimpy the controller was, then gone straight into the Zelda tech demo footage showing you how it's going to be used (because everyone would have erupted), then done a "and that's not all you can use the 6.2" touchscreen for", and gone into that montage of Wii games and the browser and everything.

well, i would have changed the name first!

but i would have announced the console, mentioned that it's aim is to recapture the core with a more powerful console capable of delivering 1080p 60fps goodness.
then shown the bird demo, and said it was real time.
then said "of course, nintendo don't just upgrade hardware specs, we innovate, and once again we bring a new way to play to home consoles..." reveal controller.
show that demo vid.
explain the controller details.
do the 3rd party stuff
and finish with "finally, the best thing about new Nintendo hardware, is new Nintendo games" and show the zelda demo/trailer.

Considering what went on with the translator talking all over Miyamoto, I'm not at all shocked they introduced the Wii U in such a odd way.

That's how translators usually work. That's why it's such a hard proffesion to be in as alot of the time you'll have two people discussing things at the same time and you need to translate flawlessly in real time. Sometimes they translate after what's been said is said, but it's usually done while the other person is talking.

It's really hard and you get paid so much money if you're good. It's just the nature of how it works. You're listening while speaking in your native language at the same time.

"As you all know we're here today to introduce you to our next all new home console.
*image of the console appears on screen*
*insert guff about we and you, break name to stunned audience*
"This is the successor to our phenomenally popular Wii and as such can both play all your existing Wii & VC games and make use of all your existing Wii controllers & accessories whilst providing a huge increase in power and technical specifications for spectacular new games."
*Showreel of 3rd party games and interviews then garden graphics demo*
"But this is just a box, nothing you haven't seen before, let me now show you just how we're going to bring yet another all new experience to your homes."
*Now show the controller*
"This is the all new controller.." etc etc, go through the features, show tech demos etc End with Zelda.

Job done. 8-)

Revealed by a group of sexy naked ladies obviously.

If I was in charge of Nintendo's E3 conference I would have do it like this:

- Quick intro
- 3DS talk
- New video footage of Nintendo games we already knew about
- Luigi's Mansion 2 announcement
- Third party games montage
- Shigsy come on stage talking about Zelda's 25 anniversary
- Announcement of 4 Swords coming to DSiWare for free
- Show a proper Story-focused Skyward Sword trailer
- Show they haven't totally forgotten about the Wii by talking about/showing trailers of Kirby Wii, Rhythm Thingy-majig, Wii Play Motion, Last Story, Xenoblade (confirming US and Pal release dates)
- Then;
- "But we all know it's our new home console you're all interested in today"
- "Well, here is our brand new home console"
- Pull out the new console
- "And here is the new controller"
- Show new controller
- Show that clip showing it in action with those comments from developers announcing which games are coming to it.
- Explain the technical specs
- Announce GTA V coming to it
- Acknowledge current online gaming system is gooseberry fool and how the new console will have a super awesome, free, online sysem.
- Close with some actual game footage of games running on new console with super awesome graffix
- Shigsy and Iwata bump fists while shouting "Fist Bump" and Reggie shreds an amazing riff on an electric guitar.
- Controlled explosions
- Fin

I would have done exactly what Nintendo did, but before the video started I would have said "remember - despite the fact we've said this about 15 times during the conference already THIS IS A NEW CONSOLE. Okay? NEW. CONSOLE. Yes? We good? NEW. CONSOLE. Not just a controller for Wii. NEW CONSOLE."

The only people who didn't know what it was are those who simply weren't paying attention. Which, admittedly, seems to have been a lot of people. Video on its own? Potentially confusing. Video viewed in context of presentation? Not confusing.
