If you were in charge of Sony or Microsoft how would you go about revealing and launching the next gen?

My plan would be

2020

Reveal event in February where all I do is announce the machine and a list of a few launch games but without any footage.

In May I'd have a small full reveal event where we show the machine and full launch line-up of games with video's and say demo's (or these days a beta but the same gooseberry fool if you ask me) will be playable at E3.

E3 reveal the console and peripheral prices and that next gen Live/Plus games will be included the same as this gen. Also announce an upgrade program for all PS4 or One games to next gen with most being free (including all console exclusives) and others being price capped at max £2.50.

I'd launch on October 9th 2020 as it's obviously the best day of the year with a global launch party in the mighty global party capital

Biggleswade Working Men's club as it has cheep beer, 2 decent pool tables and room for a top quality disco.

So, that's my basic plan how would you go about this?

both MS and Sony should go all out with these machines with top CPU/GPU combos so that we get big advancements in A.I and also all those fancy new graphical features like Ray tracing and 4K/60fps as standard.

To offset the costs on this, both should start offering the consoles on a phone contract style basis. Say you pay £30 a month for 2 years but this also includes a PSplus/PSnow or XBL/Gamepass membership as well. For Sony, you can opt to pay £50 a month to also get a PSVR2 headset.

Sony reveal - Dedicated event in Feb 2020
Microsoft reveal - At E3 2020

Both to launch in November 2020

This and give customers the choice between a disc based system and a non-disc based system with a larger HDD.

Yes, I think digital only machines at a cheaper price is a good shout.

For a start Id have a show and do a demonstration of a game or two and announce what Ram it has its processor, its graphics processor etc , I would want to go first and announce a release date that's not far away and then count on the competition trying to basically up this but I would have given out false figures in the first place. I would however make it very very clear that all the current gen games would work on it and that if you owned it on the current gen you'd automatically own it on the new console. I think people just want to know that the money they spend on stuff particularly digital stuff gets carried forwards as a lot of people have had enough of paying for Super Mario Bros 3 again and again on Nintendo platforms.

While that may help in the UK I'm not sure The Sun Newspaper has a massive readership globally.

They could do an Xbox 365 sub, you pay £50 a month and you get the console, live and game pass then when a new console comes out you just get it as part of the sub.

If the recent news that the 2080ti's frame rate tumbles to shambolic levels with Ray Tracing (even at 1080p) I think the chances of next gen using it are precisely zero.

I'd have Laura Kate dale spouting endless foundationless speculation from CLOSE SOURCES who HAVE NEVER BEEN WRONG EVER in the lead up to an event, then pull the rug out from under everyone by having her be spot on.

Too much to be honest

I think a contact console payment scheme is the next logical step for selling consoles. Gives the platform holders more opportunity to put more oomph into the systems so not restricted to a £300-400 price point and the consumers can still get in to the console cycle by stretching the cost across a 2 year plan.

I think they should go for the up market crowd and make a £1500 hyper console.

A NEO GEO for the 21st century.

Really can't see parents wanting a pay monthly method but for older generation of gamers this could work really well.

Wii U : punkeator
Xbox live : darksideby182
Psn : darksideby182
steam : Punkeator
Origin : Punkeator
Switch : 6739-1557-7191

It does make a lot of sense, especially when you look at the price of phones now. I guess the issue is, lots of people won't be able to access the credit for the monthly payments, and if they make any console £500+ it'd be dead on arrival.

Assuming consoles will now be similar to phones in that everything will just transfer over, wouldn't parents in this situation be able to buy the older model?

I'd learn lessons from previous launches and come out with all the ticks in the boxes even if I knew that a lot of the stuff people want they don't actually use. Backwards compatible, disk drive, no online only mode, etc. Just make yourself look as customer friendly as possible.

No way am I ever buying a console on a pay monthly contract

If either Sony or Microsoft drop physical media, the other should capitalise on that by definitely offering it. Me and plenty of others like having physical games for various reasons. Unfortunately I can see both dropping it and money being left on the table.

Not a chance, Sony will keep definitely physical media, they still have an interest in keeping blu ray out there. Microsoft are more likely to ditch the disc drive entirely but I think theyll make it an option for this gen at least. The future is download only but were a couple of years away from it yet.
