With the speed at which you convert an old Ion iCade into a Bartop Raspberry Pi Powered Arcade Machine, I'd imagine it will be a few years before you change the carpet. ;)

These things take time.

Mr bump.

Thanks to Devlin sort of reminding me this existed earlier, I decided to bite the bullet and actually order the parts to laser cut.

Then I got to the checkout and saw it was going to cost over £100 :dread:

I ended up not bothering with the back and base panels in the end. I can always make the back up from a bit of card if I feel it really needs it. Where the screen and marquee bit were acrylic and the speaker bit was wood, I've made all clear acrylic to save money (it's all cut from the same sheet) with matching shapes cut from black card. This way it costs half as much, plus on the card part I squeezed in a few bits with ADCADE cut out in the Sega font. I can then either backlight that bit and have it shine, or sandwich a colour in there and have those letters be whatever colour I want (if I decide to use them, full art or blank it off).

I really enjoyed reading this and taking a look although it was a little bitter sweet, I got an old busted up arcade machine and fixed it up about 10 years ago but had to leave it behind when I moved. I saw one of these I-cade things for £30 a few weeks back and if I had an Ipad id have grqabbed it.

But it and convert it like I have. Just don't take 3 years to do it.

Similar but not entirely different. I recently milled a raspberry pi 3 case out of solid oak, and cut all the ports out with a dremel. The lid just snap fits so you can still access the GPIO or SD. And I had partial success hardwiring an official Megadrive pad with its own DB9 socket (I got sonic to run and jump at least).

Will share some point.

I've actually done stuff :toot: thesethingstaketime.gif

*Warning - contains states of tables and kitchens.*

(I modified the Sega A so the middle wouldn't fall out when cut font fans)

Here's what £50 of laser cutting gets you :dread:
(Duplicate parts were to make the most out of the sheet space and give me room to paint parts if I want, sand them etc.)
Black is mountboard, white is clear acrylic with its protective sheet on.
Image

Assembling the screen outer, bezel and screen itself. Note the tension sheet in case things go wrong.

Image

When assembling I noticed the brown edge of the mountboard, so I carefully coloured it black with a marker.

Image

All sandwiched together and attached to the cabinet. I'm well impressed with how all the cutting came out. I spent far too long modelling the thing in 3d to design the perfect template, but it's still satisfying for it to actually work.

Image

So neat (apart from all the dust)

Image

Looking so good. It's really hard to take a decent photo because now the screen is like a mirror without being switched on.

Image
Image

I need some bolts for the next part which I forgot to order so attaching the speakers and the marquee has to wait, but for now I balanced it all together to give an idea of how it will look.

Also: use a strawberry floating coaster sometimes, mate.

We got given the table and it was in that mess when we got it. Plan to sand it back and stain it in the summer

With the speed of your projects, I would estimate the table will be restored by 2024. ;)
