Specifically, this advice.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/935081

I was trying to uninstall old games that no longer work. The uninstall wizard wouldn't run, for the error message shown (regarding iKernel.exe) was popping up. I did some searching and assumed MS's own support pages would be trustworthy.

How wrong was I.

Method 2 (see the link) didn't work; and now I can't try Method 3. Nor can I install or uninstall... anything!

Can anyone help?

It looks like you need to install InstallShield again. Have you tried following the link in Method 3 and reinstalling the wizard?

I'n fairness to Microsoft they do say they dont make InstallShield and that the article related so someone else's software.

It sounds like option 3 should fix this, as Karl said have you done that?

Yeah but the link in method 3 doesn't take me anywhere that allows me to re-download installshield. And I can't locate the file as advised in method 3 because I deleted the folder as per the advice of method 2.

I'm currently using sfe.exe to do a system scan / verification which (according to some further research) might help identify and repair/replace corrupt or missing files. I ran command prompt as an administrator and prompted sfc /scannow

Waiting to see if this helps or works.

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Uh oh.

Errkal, Karl, thanks for the link (it's the same one... right?) - I shall run it now...

glad you fixed it; i know the feeling of royally strawberry floating your pc.

had a windows update issue a few weeks ago so i had no 'history' of updates, and no way to install new ones :fp:

had to system restore in the end.

That moment when you realise you've disabled System Restore to save 1GB of hard disk space.

I disable restore because I like to live dangerously.

Also my important gooseberry fool is stored elsewhere.
