It seems very rare for modern remakes/reboots/sequels/revivals of movies or TV shows to be very popular. Whether it is a TV show that gets a new season years after the original ended, a reboot to an old movie series, or a new sequel to a movie franchise that hasn’t had an entry for decade or more.

What shows or movies buck this trend? Are there any TV shows that were brought back and are better? Any movie reboots that improve on the original? Any long awaited (or long feared ;) ) sequels that are better than the original(s)?

The current run of Hawaii Five O is much better than the original. The concept is no different to the countless other buddie cop related shows, but the setting is nice.

It’s not as good as the films at all but Lethal Weapon also stands on its own feet.

Battlestar Galactica reboot was stellar. The new Planet of The Apes films are better than the older movies (a lot of the old movies are absolutely cack).

Not sure if Fury Road counts.

The old ones are still strawberry floating ace. The new one is ace in a different manner.

- The Westworld TV show is definitely better than the good but not great exploitation-western movie from the 70s.
- Silence of the Lambs is better than Manhunter.
- Tom Holland's Spiderman is better than MacGuire and Garfield's (the character and the standalone film, although Spiderman 2 has its charms).
- Ditto with Ruffalo's Hulk.
- The new Star Wars films are better than the Prequels.
- Bladerunner 2049 is arguably better than the original (which still amazes me)

It was decades after the original and so counts if you think it’s better than the original trilogy.

Mad Max: Fury Road - although the originals are still great, Fury Road is phenomenal.

Blade Runner 2049 - arguably better, but I'd probably put it on par until I can watch them again. Still far surpassed my expectations given the break.

Samurai Jack Season 5 wasn't better than the originals, but it delivered on a long-awaited ending and succeeded with a compelling tone shift for the grown-up audience.

The 1968 film is still far and away the best

The remakes of Cape Fear and Invasion of the Body Snatchers were both better than the originals.

I'm probably one of the few people who prefers Manhunter to Silence of the Lambs.

I think I must have watched a different Fury Road to everyone else on here, it was a good film but nothing special. I'd say it was on par with the first two movies.

The 2009 Star Trek movie was surprisingly good, not sure it's better than some of what came before but it certainly exceeded most expectations.

It was a pretty low bar to have to get over but Dredd is significantly better than Stallone's steaming turd original.

I've never seen the original TV show, but Netflix's "Lost in Space" kicks the gooseberry fool out of the crappy 90s movie.

The latest Ghosbusters film was such a surprisingly good reboot, very refreshing and hilarious in equal measure.

Just kidding.

Blade Runner 2049 is a masterpiece, but so was the original so it's a toss up. 2049 does have Ana de Armas though, which always helps

Poor Matt LeBlanc !

I quite like the old film, but the new show is very good and I am very happy it has been renewed for Season 2!

Ocean's Eleven. The original Rat Pack one was bollocks. The new one will also be bollocks though, so this goes both ways.

The Coen Brother's True Grit was a good remake

The remaster of Resident Evil (and I'm referring to the PC HD re-release of REmake here, available on Steam - but consider the Gamecube REmake the version that mattered the most) is outstanding. The PS1 Resident Evil will always be hilarious for its cheese, ridiculous B-movie cutscenes and hilarious script, but REmake is actually a good game that I enjoyed playing
