PostI trust game site reviews, not you lot!

I want to just say at this point that I love GRcade and each and every one of you folk.

Now, with that out of the way I'd like to point out that nothing will sway me to buy a game that gets sub 7/10 in the majority of its review scores. No matter what any of you say.

There's as simple reason for this.

In this forum we generally have well informed folk but within this microcosm we have fanboys of extremity. People who will not buy a game based on its genre, heritage or developer. Alongside such dimwits are the console fanboys who will deride any exclusive of the 'rival' console as rubbish or 'on 'my' console it would be better cos of x & y'.

I am as guilty as anyone for fanboyism, but believe me, I have turned down the dial since I was a Nintendo child. With age I have realised that all the consoles have something going for them*. This Bias though, fouls any judgement made in this 'community' of sorts and I do find that Game site reviews [and to a lesser extent magazines] do lend themselves in my mind to a less biased conclusion.

Prototype and Fuel where two games that I kept and eye on. Not an excited eye that bulged and watered with the mere hint of news about them but a steady gazing eye. Now the Reviews are out and on the whole, they've been pretty poor. I know there are a few high blips amongst the critical masses and I don't count platform specific reviews at all in such matters.

I've been burnt many times over the years in different forums proclaiming love for turds. There are people out there that somehow see through all the repetition, eye curdlingly bad graphics and framerates. Suprisingly, with attention span intact, they'll wax lyrical about some tiny aspects and forget the sum of those parts is a minus number. So, no, I won't be buying Prototype or Fuel and probably not even Infamous because more often than not, the people who championed these games where severely biases in some way towards them.

*I do love my 360 a teensy bit more. :)

Not the case at all. In fact on the whole they've both got very positive reviews (less so Fuel perhaps), with only a few suspect low scoring reviews.

Yes. Like Fable 1 in HD...with bigger areas, a better combat system, more in depth interaction, an amazing AI companion and just generally more to do.

So not really Fable 1 in HD then. Its actually factually wrong.

I wrote about 2 paragraphs and deleted them as each could be summarised as:

I'm quite the opposite, this place has got me into a lot of games that I otherwise wouldn't have touched.

Phoenix Wright, Valkyria Chronicles, Portal...the list goes on. :D

So you'd trust a site paid for by adverts from games publishers, over a forum full of independents?

Um, ok then?

I owe a lot of my experiences with great games to recommendations on here, so there you go. *shrug*

A little harsh I reckon. People are enthusiastic about games they like in their genre. Someone who is a huge fan of 3rd person action games would give Prototype a glowing review the evivelent of 20% than it should get.

For example, if you listen to my views you will see I love Point and Clicks and will give them 20% higher because its my genre. In contrast I hate racing games.

I try and pick up on whick people on the site have similar taste to me and take the rest with a large pinch of salt.

What he said. I trust the people on here far more, especially seeing as those who are fanboys can be seen from a mile away, usually because everyone says "piss off" to them. I have this forum to thank for most of my DS collection, with special big props for Hero Of Canton for getting me into Phoenix Wright, Yakuza AND The World Ends With You. Though that's being unfair, Suzzopher also aided in selling Yakuza to me.

Good luck Mr Protek.

I know some people who have left Grcade already :(

I'm a proud PS3 owner and don't think Grcade is a good place for PS3 only owners TBH.

Really? After all this time, you'd think you would have mentioned it.

As for this thread, community feedback on certain games seems to be becoming more and more important in assessing their real "worth". Just in the past month, Red Faction and Grand Slam Tennis are two examples - general forum reaction being pretty different to general critical reaction. And Canton mentioned FUEL's reviews last week on a similar theme.
