Said JFK, somewhat famously.

And I too, will be a berliner, at least for a few days, as that is where I will be spending my new year. However, I have not been to Germany, let alone Berlin, so I would appreciate any tips you have for me to enhance my experience. I've been informed that it's a great party town, and I will be staying in the centre, so should be near to any places you guys can suggest. I'll be staying from the 31st to the 3rd, so any pubs, clubs, sights that you think I should check out, I'd love to know.

And to make this into an Off Topic topic rather than an ATF, What is everyone doing for new year?

The thing is, that pretty much all places are most likely going to be booked out. For 0:00 i can actually recommend going to the brandenburg gate, as it will have a public fireworks display. Usually does and it's usually quite pretty, if a bit cold :D regarding clubs: there are some to try out near the S Hackescher Markt, then the whole Greifswalder Str. are renowned for their clubs as well as Friedrichshain (the district) for its bars. I quite liked the Kulturbrauerei (near Schoenhauser Allee), which is a collection of various things on one site. Berlin is full of clubs, how about checking out http://www.berlin030.de ?

"Berliner" is most commonly referring to a filled doughnut. which is why everyone is making fun of that sentence.

Yep, that's why it's so famous, because he pretty much said 'I am a Doughnut'

they just say that they're "from Berlin" basically.... "Ich bin aus Berlin", so to speak. However, I never get asked that, people just assume I'm English. Or Australian. Or Irish (o.O).. pfff, ignorants.

Do you not have much of an accent then?

I used to know some South African girls who got told pretty much every day of their time here that they were Australian. It drove them up the wall.

Got a fairly British accent, I'd assume.

and again, for new years, check out berlin030.de ; that's what we used all the time until I moved here. Or go to the fireworks display.

Cheers. Shame I can't understand any German, that website looks really useful. Schoenhauser Allee seems to be closer to where I am staying too (I'm just a bit north of Alexanderplatz)

the Schoenhauser is a parallel street to the Greifswalder Strasse, you can go there either by train (Schoenhauser Alle -> 2 stops to Greifswalder Str.) or by tram, but i forgot the amount of stops that was. shame that page is now german only, used to be a bit less complex but German and English. Google Translate?

Staying with a German family is rather odd, my Grandma is from Germany so I have a lot of relatives over there. The culture and general atmosphere in Germany is so different that it's pretty hard to settle in, nothing over there is the same in UK. Good luck in Berlin, never been there myself but if it's anything like the bits of Germany I have visited it'll be fine.
