I don't know much about Morocco and I've never had the desire to go there before, but I've bagged myself free accommodation in March and that would be foolish to turn down.

My housemate's friend, a high-profile businessman and one of C4's Secret Millionaires, has a villa in Marrakech, so I'm staying with my housemate at no charge!

Has anyone been to Morocco and what did you think?

I thought Morocco was where all the queens went in the 40s and 50s.

Here's the place where I'm staying in Tangier (not Marrakech as previously claimed):

It has a showhome feel to it because the guy rents it out when he wants.

Yeah, Joe Orton and Kenneth Williams used to go there alot in the 60s. Also, some of William Burrough's book The Naked Lunch is based on his experiences in Marrakech.

Anyway, how will you be 'repaying' this fellow for his free accommodation? Will it be like an 'Uncle Monty' type situation in Withnail and I?

It's just a favour as my housemate is good friends with him. They go way back. I'm sure, however, that if the situation arises, I will step up and do what's necessary.

Oh, I'm sure you will, young man. ;)

I have a friend - a rather elderly gentleman who lives in London's rather exclusive Notting Hill Gate enclave of rich poofs with a little too much money. He has a fascination for dusky young North African boys - handy, as he also keeps a place over in Tangiers, which he's owned for the best part of thirty-five years. He's often asked if I'd like to stay in the place when he's not renting it out.

Part of me has always been tempted, tbh, but let's face it: I'd just behave atrociously, embarrass myself, run into a spot of bother and it would all end badly.

He tells me things are getting a little more difficult for gaylords over there these days: the rise of a more militant Islam across parts of North Africa has put paid to the kind of liberal, no holds barred sexual proclivity that was once in it's heyday back in the 60-80's.

All things must change, etc.

But think of the fun you will have before you get the 25 year sentence!

I went to Morocco once. Here's what happened when I talked to a local:

Me
Hey, which way to the pyramids?

Local
The pyramids? Nah mate, they're in Egypt, this is Morocco

Me
Which way to the Sphinx?

Local
You're having a laugh! Different country, my old son.

Me
Tutankhamun and that...

I did this by severing my real arms and replacing them with super-human cyborg arms.

I'd avoid Tangier if I were you, it can be quite pleasant to walk around in the day time, but it's not a particularly pleasant place at night and if chocked to the brim with crooks and scam artists looking to prey on foreigners (in my experience at least, was only there for a couple of days). Marrakesh is really nice, you can stay at hostels just off the main square for about £3 a night if you're not too fussy, our also allowed you to sit on the roof which gave a great view of the square. I'd really reccommend going to the night market there; the food's awesome. From Marrakesh you can book trips out of the city for anything between a day and 5 days; we only got the chance to make a day-trip to the cascades (a series of waterfalls in the middle of the desert) which was great fun, and full of hippies, if you're into that kinda thang. Didn't manage to make any desert treks but that's an option if you fancy it. The mountain village of Chevchowen (that's not how it's spelt, but that's how it sounds) is worth a visit too, really pretty and famed for its pot. It is getting very touristy though so I don't know what it'll be like now. You can get the bus there from Tangier, not sure about getting there from other cities. Fez, I've heard, is very nice too, though I never got the chance to go there myself.

Anyways, Morocco's a great country mate, there's so much I've yet to see and do there and I'd love to go back one day. I'm sure you'll have a sick time.
