If IGN wanted to address the lack of exclusives on the system then there are better, more professional ways to go about it than posting fanboy clickbait.

Just left the story alone and went exploring in the first big open area the game gives you to do that. Went on a couple of adventures and found out some more about the world and upped my gear a bit. When you’re really into the swing of combat and just munching foes left right and centre it’s really satisfying. It takes a lot of work to get there though as the controls don’t feel that natural though and there’s a lot to keep track of.

I think I know what you mean, it's one of those games that you could get really good at but cone back in a couple of months and forget how to do anything.

Played another few hours this morning and it really is incredible. The presentation, story and combat just gets better and better. There is always something to explore and do without being overwhelming, the pacing has been spot on so far.

People are saying the physical copy of the game comes with a reversible cover but mine does not.

I don't have the game, zXe, but it seems that the USA version has a reversible cover. And it bears resemblance to the Switch's Doom cover :o ...

It's a bit of a weird one because you have to balance the right to honest editorial comment with not alienating your customer base and key partner. So a reporter at IGN speaking on a podcast or in written piece be able to make this comment as the words can be attributed to one individual and that should be absolutely fine. I think why some were irked about this is because on the social channels it makes appear to be official comment from IGN. Reading between the lines it seems Aaron Greenberg kicked up a fuss. IGN Xbox editor Ryan McCaffrey made a grovelling apology and Greenberg tweeted 'Thanks Ryan, appreciate the note and follow up.' It demonstrates why the journalistic team shouldn't be best friends with staff from the company they are reviewing.

I'm at the part of the light of Alfeim. Not putting a downer on the high reviews but I'm curious about the 'this will change gaming' comments. So far it's all good and nice, finest quality father son acting and facial animations, besides the customisations the gameplay isn't anything new from previous games. The franchise has always had a linear path and that's been absolutely fine, it's the genre. This game widens that linearity, or at least tries to hide the walls but so far there was a part where it felt too on rails, like I was being led down one very pretty but boring corridor. I'm still early in the game so expect to see the game 'open up.'

I’m getting lost keeping track of all these different stones, runes and upgrade types! Good game though, when people mention the first big open area do they mean the part when you wake the World Serpent?

Was just about to write something similar. I don’t mean to do the game down at all, it’s really bloody good and I’ve played about 10 hours today. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus is fantastic, the presentation is beautiful and the combat is getting toward top tier. The scores though and some of the ‘Imagine Zelda with good story, Last of Us with good combat’ etc etc is more than a little overblown from what I’ve played. For the way way it’s been talked about and reviews have aggregated I’d kind of expect moment to moment gameplay to just be a non-stop thrill ride, a constant grin on my face, can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner etc. But for me at the moment it’s just not quite that. The environments aren’t that intriguing and since the first few hours the story has kind of meandered off course to the point that I don’t really know what I’m doing anymore. There was a bit before Alfheim where the witch spoke solidly for about 5 minutes and it was just a stream of nonsense I had no interest in. During the first big fight in the game where Atreus is hiding you get the sense the game is going down a certain path and it felt really strawberry floating cool and I wanted to see where it went. It just dropped that like a stone though and now it’s just a bit Sad Dad simulator.

That’s the only real gripe though, it’s a blood cracking game. Chucking the axe about and smashing fools won’t ever get old I think. Can definitely see myself playing through for a second time to scale up the combat.

Where have those comments come from?

I've not seen a whole hell of a lot of coverage, but what I have seen from sites that I have looked at (generally mainstream videogame sites) has been along the lines of it 'just' being a very good game, specifically one that takes a lot of inspiration from already existing games. Haven't really seen anything out there suggesting its in any way breaking new ground.

There have been impressions that have mentioned how this is pushing the boundaries of the medium. I'm still too early, but I can kinda see where those observations are coming from. It's less about how it plays, I think it's more about the overall presentation and the experience you are getting compared to most games these days. You can feel how much attention this game got into it's craft. If you ever get folks who still doubt this medium, show them games like this. Just my take. I personally prefer more narrative driven games so I guess there's bias here >,>

It's the Breath of the Wild thing of bringing lots of existing ideas together and executing them all wonderfully.

Venom, you're almost at the point where the game opens up with side missions and the like. I went off trying to find one and had a few surprises with the places I found. The attention to detail really is incredible.

10 hours or so in now and the game is a lot more open with side quests and random stuff to do. I did a side quest and the creature it led me to.... Wow.

I've upgraded the axe a lot and the bow too. Also got some stuff to unlock other things so the game is all metroidvania now.

As has already been said, the axe though. Just so satisfying to use and the press triangle to call it back is so cool. Combat is a lot more Bloodborne than expected which suits me as I adore Bloodborne.

The way the story is told via random chats on the journey is so well done. I hope they do a sequel with him in ancient Egypt.

Those chest that require you to find every rune are great. Requiring you to be a little more creative with the Axe which is smart. There's one in particular that you have to hit all in a certain order and in a time frame. I figured you can throw the Axe like any projectile and it has a descending arc. Which I used my advantage by hitting one of the runes that was further away to save time. It's simple but incredibly satisfying lol.

Also came across my first end game enemy that instantly one shot me after waking it >,> I'm glad they're there tho.
