PostIndiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (Wii, DS, PSP)
by tomvek » Sat Jan 24, 2009 2:07 am

Looks like Indiana Jones' video game adventures might not be completely canceled, at least according to a newly (and unofficially) released trailer for Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings for the Wii.

Wait, the Wii? Yes, it looks like rumors about Indy's demise on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms were pretty accurate — and probably foretold by this post — and that LucasArts' commitment to the "franchise" is genuine.

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings will arrive on the Wii, Nintendo DS and at least one PlayStation platform starting this Spring. Both the ESRB and PEGI say that PlayStation platform is the PSP, but it may also mean the PlayStation 2.

If the trailer is indicative of gameplay settings, it looks like Indiana Jones' adventures will span familiar territories in Staff of Kings. We just can't wait to see how much whip-waggling we'll do.

Thanks to Irfaan for the pointer.

Spring 2009? And all we have at this point is a CGI trailer?

Might be surprised. I Am Alive has a release date at March, and we only have a CGI trailer for that too.

I Am Alive has been delayed hasn't it?

I think I read that somewhere.

Perhaps, but the idea that they could release it by March with only a trailer out shows what can be done. And this game is probably easier to make?

Eh, it's not like Lucasarts don't have previous with the platform - so they have game engines to exploit. All they really need to do is let the artists loose and crowbar a bunch of Indy content into one of them.

What I want to know is "what's up with that title?" Staff of Kings? I can't think of any kings who used a staff. Frankly, it sounds like some kind of homosexual euphemism.

Doesn't anyone else think that this just looks dreadful - every Indiana cliche packed into one game - so much for original thinking...

I don't see why anyone would have been expecting anything different. It's what every Indy game has been since Fate of Atlantis,

Not much you can say really since it's all CG. Motion controlled whips could be fun.

Indiana Jones Wii: First details

LucasArts has released the first screenshots and details on long, long coming Indiana Jones game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings.

Apparently the WII and PSP game (still no sign of the next-gen version) will feature "completely interactive environments" where players can use scenery as a weapon in order to dispense of foes in "clever and unexpected" ways. Sounds a bit Bourne to us.

LucasArts also promises "thrilling action sequences" that remain true to the spirit established in scenes such as Indy's pursuit of the motorcade in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the mine-cart scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and the free-for-all aboard the tank in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Excitingly 1992 classic Indy graphical adventure game Fate of Atlantis is also promised as an unlockable. It's looking quite good then. Now can we have the PS3 and 360 versions, please?

Full game info list follows...

* Wield your Wii Remote like Indy's signature whip for a variety of uses - from combat to navigation to puzzle-solving.

* Use your highly interactive Hot Set environments and your wits to defeat your enemies.

* Explore exotic locations around the globe in an all-new story that puts you on an epic quest for the Staff of Moses.

* Apply your smarts to navigate Indy through challenging terrains with the many maneuvers Indy can do with his whip.

* Engage in burst gunplay moments and use careful aim and the environment to take out enemies.

* Face overwhelming odds and escape signature run-for-your-life moments, like a daring escape from a collapsing temple, by matching fast-paced onscreen gesture prompts.

* Experience thrilling chases and control vehicles - fly a biplane in a canyon trench, take the reigns of a wild elephant through the streets of Istanbul and navigate a raft down a raging river.

* Cooperative gameplay mode allows you and a friend to brave the challenges in a variety of game modes in an entirely new quest with a familiar character never playable before in an Indy game.

* Unlock four-player versus mode where you and your friends go head-to-head in a real biplane combat or take on three of your friends in a free for all tank battle!

* Whether you are brawling baddies or wielding your whip, use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk as nature intended with the intuitive gesture-based combat system.

* Discover more than 20 artifacts and rewarding unlockables throughout the game.

* For those old-school gamers there is nothing better than unlocking the classic Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis game!

* On the Nintendo DS, use the stylus as the whip to swing over pits, brawl with enemies and to explore the world.

* The PSP (PlayStationPortable) system version features six robust types of burst gameplay including combat and physics challenges, puzzles and the trademark Indiana Jones chase sequences.

what else would you want in an indy game? a gritty FPS set in the future? an abstract puzzle game? a GTA rip off where Indy drives round the town running over hookers?

The PSP one is the one I am looking forward to. I would love to play Fate of Atlantis whilst commuting.

Well, this is disappointing...

Is that the Wii version? It looks considerably worse than the game that was released back in 2003 on Xbox & then later on PS2. Shambles.

I've got the original Fate of Atlantis which I've been meaning to play again for ages. It really is a quality game. Before it was released I remember looking in PC Format at the screenshots for it (and Monkey Island 2) and they looked so beautiful to me, it was like the reaction I have now when I look at the Streetfighter IV graphics - only stronger. Great story. 3 paths

What with Broken Sword coming to the Wii, and Indy Atlantis, the Graphic Adventure genre might live again on the Wii. Fingers crossed.

:)

They are from the Wii version. (it's possible that they aren't, but most sites have down as shots from the Wii version)

Some more info about the Wii version. (nabbed from GAF)

The game is seriouslly much better looking then these screenshots...

Id say one of the best Wii games visually!
