What can we do though? We can't go to war with them, they have a well equipped and well trained million man army.

I haven't even mentioned the nukes!!

Actually although the army is large in size, it's not very well equipped, and it certainly isn't well motivated. Give any member of that army even a sliver of a chance to escape and all but the highest ranking would fold.

As far as the nuke goes, I remember reading in a book that to create the explosion which let the world know they had nukes, they used about 50% of all the uranium in the country. The greatest threat from them would probably be Kim Jong Il having the nuke placed in his own bunker and detonating it if he was on the verge of defeat.

The real reason that no one can just go in there and finish them off is because they are allies of China.

Rightey is right....ey, China likes having NK as a buffer between themselves and a highly westernised Asian nation. With Japan, Taiwan and South Korea, China is probably a bit jumpy about it's neighbours.

And with regards to the NK forces, I seriously doubt their army is actually up to much. Their navy and air force are more of a threat than the starving, poorly developed soldiers. Most of them would jump at the chance of surrender and getting a hot meal.

Yeah, everything I've read about the North Korean armed forces is they've got obsolete tech, questionable motivation and the country as a whole is short on fuel and food. The American and South Korean forces could easily defeat them in a conflict. I don't really see China getting involved militarily, although they'd be pissed trade with the west is too valuable for them (trade with South Korea alone is worth far more than that with North Korea) to prop up a useless ally.

The problem is the North Korean regime is unlikely to act rationally if they're getting defeated and are likely to go down the kill as many South Koreans as possible route. Seoul and its surrounding regions have a population of 24 million and are what, 30 miles from North Korea? Even if they can't use a Nuke they've got enough conventional (and chemical?) weapons to kill a hell of a lot of people, which is one of the main reasons why military intervention will not happen. As much as I'd love to see North Korea freed the deaths it would cause can't be justified.

The design plans they had for the Ryugyong were pretty futuristic...

Most of the windows are in but I doubt they'll ever complete the rooms until they reform and make some money...

If I'm being totally honest, the Ryugyong actually looks quite nice.

If it's the big indoor thing from that Faithless video then yeah if not then probably not. Where has Pyongyang got all the money for these projects from? I can't see the Chinese being too please about their money going toward that Ryugyong eyesore if it's from them.

Don't think they have got any projects going on other than the hotel.

I've done some research on The North Korean military and can conclude that they would get their arses handed to them by South Korea without the need for American assistance.

I find it incredibly creepy. It looks like a typical communist, 1984 style government building, with Big Brother, or in this case Kim Jong Il right at the top.

Why on earth do they think they need a hotel there anyway? It's not like they thrive off of western tourism, and their own citizens don't have the money to go there themselves. Nut jobs.

Wikipedia wrote:Construction began in 1987, but was halted in 1992 due to the economic disruptions that afflicted the country. The hotel stood topped out but without windows or interior fittings for the next sixteen years, until construction resumed in April 2008, under the supervision of the Orascom Group of Egypt, which has invested heavily in the North Korean mobile telephony and construction industries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryugyong_Hotel

It's corrupt, moral-less companies like this that are another part of the problem. The country cannot survive on its own but if it receives any outside "help" it will take it in order to prolong its downward spiral. I think the UN needs to do more to intervene with outside interactions in order to make sure what's being given goes to the starving citizens and not the power crazed officials.

Slave labour is pretty cheap I'd imagine.

There's plenty of outrage about slave construction labour in the UAE, maybe the Egyptians are not so different.

North Korean mobile telephony? Surely something good for the people in that.

If you're jammy enough to get given a mobile from the government and like having your calls monitored so you can be spirited away down the mines if you say anything wrong

If you managed to get hold of one it would be another way of getting information from the outside. But would you even dare tell your neighbour you had a phone?

On the video she mentioned they drive around doing Signal checks, so if it even looks like you've got some form of access to the internet or a phone service, you'll be probably executed or sent to the gulag.
