Saw this newsnight series linked over on Neogaf and thought I'd spread the word. Really interesting stuff.

This is actually scary to watch to think a country works like that.

I've watched a few documentaries on NK - it's a fascinating place.

Oh dude it is mental that this place is still allowed to be run like it is. If North Korea had gas or oil reserves then I'm sure we'd be interested in liberating it, but as it's just a dead country with no resources there's not much it in for us except a million troops who would fight to the death.

Eventually society will collapse and everyone will realise exactly what's been going on, the pure amount of brainwashing is just terrifying, it could happen anywhere and there's nothing you can really do to break it unless you show them something of the outside world.

It must just be the shittest, most miserable existence. I'd rather kill myself than live as a brainwashed slave.

You just feel like smacking Obama and Cameron over the head with this.

The world should act, it's 2010 ffs.

I remember watching this video a few months back. Obviously it's a bit long so wouldn't expect anyone to sit through all of it, but there's one particularly harrowing part where the journalist is having an organised, state-controlled/setup picnic in the forest and he says something like "this is what it must have been like to go on a day trip in Nazi Germany, knowing what horrors were going on a few miles away."

The trouble is, you can't act.

They have Nuculear Weapons and they're not afraid to fire them at anyone they want to, if you act on Korea they'll either just Obliterate the south and vise versa and it'll cause the pointless loss of millions of innocent lives.

I don't see any kind of military action happening against North Korea, ever.

It's really qute sad but that's the reality of the situation.

I'm well aware that acting isn't that simple, but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't act, or even shouldn't want to act.

How would you propose that we act?

I'm not sure. I imagine that the actual military prowess of NK is probably quite low, they wouldn't really pose that big a problem to the modern armies of the US and South Korea.

In a way, the NK army is a bit like Iraq was in 2003. Massive, but rubbish. And once the leadership goes they would crumble and things would get easier.

But of course, military action should always be the last resort. The UN should force China to pressure NK more to open their borders and accept UN aid, which would bring with it more focussed media attention across the world. Trouble is, of course, is that with level to which the general public are brainwashed, they not actually want to be rescued.

Very tricky situation indeed, but to say that acting would be difficult shouldn't mean that the world should just carry on ignoring the massive humanitarian disaster that is going on.

Ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away.

gooseberry fool, if we go right now, I reckon we could have that country liberated just in time for the Germany vs. Australia game.

And the problem with brainwashed people is that, as a rule, they don't know they're brainwashed. That's kind of the point. It's no use going "Can't you see!? You've been brainwashed!!!"...
