PostInspire a Generation!
by Slartibartfast » Sun Aug 12, 2012 6:57 pm

Now that the Olympics is over, I'm wondering whether any of you have been inspired - or might be inspired - to take up a new sport!

I fancy giving Fencing a go and will be on the look out for any shorter triathlons in the area (although I'm awful at swimming speedily).

For some of us, myself included, it's a bit late to aim to become an Olympic athlete in Rio, but maybe, just maybe, GRcade could sneak onto the bottom of the next Olympic medal table.

(yes I know Football isn't on the poll but if you have grown up in the UK and haven't tried it then you truly do play too many computer games)

I never learnt to ride a bike as a kid, I never saw the point but I really want to pick up cycling. Nothing serious like, just so I can ride around places.

That, Mountain Biking looks pretty cool, though living in central London it might be a bit difficult to get into.

I've started taking my running more seriously, and I'll have a look at Rowing if I go Uni. I feel suitably inspired.

Already started lifting weights before the Olympics, but it was incredible to watch, and I'd love to move on to trying out some proper Olympic lifts. Those snatches, man.

Also, I'd love to give archery a shot.

Honestly, I've just been talking on Mumble about it but when I was young I walked everywhere and honestly never wanted to bother to learn after my training wheels were taken off, I found it much easier to just walk everywhere. I was lazy even back then.

It probably doesn't help that my Dad was away most of the time and my mum was already disabled at that point (although no where near as bad as she is now).

The missing option for 'Nothing' would be a big winner.

I'm getting my bike fixed and going to start riding it, wouldn't say it was inspired by the olympics though.

Boxing.

I've trained in Muay Thai in the past, but I want to improve my upper-body game. Nothing too serious really - I've bought a couple of books to read over and have started adding heavy bag workouts and skipping to my workout routine again. I'll see about joining a club (maybe) in a few months time, but I might just keep it as a hobby - joining a club and sticking to specific training times normally saps my enthusiasm for it.

I might look into badminton and archery clubs in the area too. Archery seems like it could turn into an expensive hobby though :(

Edit: Oh, I got really into the swimming too so I've started doing more of that since the start of the Olympics. Will start reading articles and watching videos to improve my stokes, but no intention of taking it further than that!

I had to combine the cycling and get rid of football because there's a limit on poll options!
