(aka Delusibeta's 2500th post spectacular)

Welcome to the Drum & Bass thread.

What is drum & bass?
Drum & Bass is a genre of electronic music, mainly focusing on sub-bass and drum breakbeats (hence the name), mainly around 160-180BPM tempo. If you want more detail, this post over on the Something Awful forums is really in-depth (albeit a bit old).

Cut to the chase: what do you recommend?
For newcomers to the genre, here's my recommendations.

Pendulum - Hold Your Colour
Image
To use a clunky anime metaphor, this is yer Cowboy Bebop. It's hard to find a DnB fan who doesn't like this album, and it's very much an ideal entry point to the genre. Their later albums, In Silico and Immersion sounds substantially more rock-y, venturing into territory already well covered by The Prodigy, leading to the traditional claims of selling out (and, in my opinion, isn't as good)
Samplers:

Chase & Status - More Than Alot

Chase & Status - No More Idols

Chase & Status' debut also has a lot of fans. A large quantity of big tunes are present and correct. Like Pendulum, their next album ([i]No More Idols[/b]) had more guitars (and more dubstep), however in my opinion is still quite good (I prefer it over Pendulum's later albums), and is probably worth a look.
Samplers:

Various Artists - Fifteen Years of Hospital Records
Image
For those that prefer the liquid end of the spectrum, the kingpins of the sub-genre, Hospital Records, recently released a 37 track compilation covering their decade and a half in the business, and then slapped 15 new tracks on the front for good measure. Essential for newcomers to the genre, and bloody good value to boot (especially the digital version, which gets you all 52 tracks in mixed and unmixed form. (Note for people outside the UK: probably be best to buy it direct to get the old tracks)
Samplers:

There's plenty more where that comes from, but those are my recommendations for getting into the genre.

Where should I look to find more?
YouTube seems to be the main place to find it. Pretty much every tune worth its salt is on there. Recommended channels include:
UKF Drum & Bass: The major channel for mainstream drum & bass. If you've heard it on the radio, it was uploaded here two weeks ago.
Drum & Bass Arena: The traditional hub, the YouTube also hosts their DNBTV archives: three and a half years worth of live mixes. Did someone say "archive binge"?
Liquicity: Probably the premier channel for liquid.

Also good: label channels.
Hospital Records
Ram Records
Shogun Audio

Finally: podcasts. Recommended podcasts include
Drum & Bass Arena Podcast (iTunes link)
Hospital Records Podcast (iTunes link)
Shogun Audio Podcast (iTunes link)

Right then, discuss and post more D&B.

*nay*

Duly noted. I realise Pendulum isn't flavour of the month (and hasn't since they left Breakbeat Kaos) but it's my recommendation and Hold Your Colour was the album that got me properly into the genre.

Just a few of my favourites. I tend to enjoy more melodic (and vocal) DnB - might not be for most, but some might enjoy these...

Also, big shout for the gone but not forgotten BabyD. RIP.

John B - Emotion (Radio Mix)

Alex Reece - Candles (DJ Pulse Remix)

Nitin Sawhney - Nadia

Ultra Nate - Escape That (4Hero Remix)

MC Conrad - Future's Call (Makoto Live Remix)

jk all tastes are in nature man.

I got most of my dnb from recommendations by Abs in the currently listening to thread, so I'll just wait till he posts.

Speaking of dnb, though, the other day I was listening to a compilation and found the source for the "Ghetto Brothers" from this track:

This is probably the first time I've heard a sample being slowed down instead of being sped up.

EDIT - Cal, good call on 4hero. Two Pages is probably one of my favorite albums ever.

Personally I did think Immersion was a significant step back in the right direction after the slightly wonky In Silico, proof that Pendulum still had it at least.

An awesome ragga jungle track.

And another track from Wicked Squad (Austrian jungle duo) with a great girl MC.

Just found this on the youtubes:

Plug aka Luke Vibert. Nice chilled DnB with straightforward crunchy snares and some strings samples.

Worst new genre ever. I rather listen to country music.

Harsh. Whilst it's true I prefer more melodic DnB to to the hard-edged 'Industrial' type, I can sometimes see the attraction there, too. I also like jazzy, chilled DnB (LTJ Bukem style). Then again, I'll easily listen to a playlist containing DnB, UK Garage (vocal, melodic), Psybient and Electronica (Shulman, Trip Switch, Blutech) and all the way out to the most austere of David's Sylvian's wonderful sound experiments (yes, he's still around, still making albums).

I love electronic music, generally. Also 'fusion', '4th world' music where East meets West (Prem Joshua is a perfect example, especially the remix album - I love the atmosphere of this kind of music, very entrancing).

Back to DnB: Drum and Bass is a very exciting genre; new things happen there all the time and I consider the genre still one of the most innovative and constantly surprising.
