So we can home yesterday and our home hub 5 has a red flashing b on the modem under a solid orange light. After extensive research and numerous "chats" with their "support" they've decided to call me back today. Resetting it doesn't work. Rebooting it doesn't work. I can literally access the home hub manager page and that's it.

We have had a lot of rain past few days and various forums are saying it knocks the router out of service..basically because the device is gooseberry fool.

Question is can i buy a router that will replace it? I've got my eye on one. Bt says you can't uses a third party all in one router. But everyone who has used one says it's okay.

We've got bt infinity.

Thanks to anyone that can help

Isn't the home hub also the modem?
You'd need to make sure you got a Fibre compatible Modem/Router combo if you were going to replace it. If rain were the cause though I'd expect the issue would lie more with the actual line than the router, so you'd experience the issue with whatever modem you used.

A quick search shows that people have replaced a Home Hub 5 with their own modem/router combo but you'll need the login details used by the modem as well. Not sure if BT allow you to have those though, some providers do and some don't because they want to tie you into their equipment.

Yeah the login details are on the homehub page. And are detailed on the forums.

I have been searching for vdsl ones which will work. They have said the line is fine. I'm going to make sure there is a dial tone with a phone ( as we don't have a landline) the read b indicates a problem with BB so says their help page. I've checked the wires and cables and switched them with other ones. Still does nothing. So the only other option is the router. I can't see it being anything else.

If it's borked, don't BT just replace it for free when an engineer gets there?

No engineer is visiting. They're calling. And we've had issues with the hh already. So I was thinking about getting a better one in the future.

Yeah, but if they call and can't get it working an engineer will get booked in.

HH5 is pretty good tbh. Bit unlucky to get a dodgy one.

Thing is it was perfectly fine Friday morning. Now it's having none of it. A phone works fine. Ringing in and out. So I can't see how it's a line problem. :x

Glowy, I'd be cautious about seeking to replace the hub with a non-BT hub. I know it's frustrating but, generally, the BT hubs have a good reputation. It may not be the hub that is at fault; the problem may be with the internet cable running from your home to the connection cabinet; or it may be a fault with the connection in the cabinet itself or at the BT centre.

In my experience, BT are pretty good at resolving these issues and they will provide any replacement equipment where necessary. It's a pain in the backside, of course, but it's probably worth giving them time to resolve the issue before you look to replace kit.

I don't see why rain would knock the router out of service, unless of course you keep it outside.

Have you tried the obvious stuff like moving the router to a different telephone point and changing the filter (assuming BT's hub uses a filter).

Yes?

We only have one telephone point. If the filter was faulty then surely the phone wouldn't work. There are reports of bad weather effecting the router. It hammered it down yesterday. Got back about 5 and it wasn't working. Flashing b ever since. Used the test socket which bypasses all the wiring and it still did the same thing.

There were quite a few thunderstorms over the past few days, maybe there was a power surge. I can't imagine rain alone would damage a router.

If it showing lights it is working, I would think it is a line issue.

I would insist an engineer comes out.

The HH5 is garbage. Replace it with any modem router marked as VDSL2. I swapped mine for a Netgear D7000 without issue, but I can never remember the PPPoE username/password, so every time I upgrade the firmware I have to spend ages working it out again. They don't list the correct one on their site (at least for my area) and Google searches offer a range of choices that are all wrong.

I should really write it down one of these days.

They're ringing me tonight. If the phone works surely the line is working. Their site says my fault is being investigated at their end within their retail servers? I swear to God if the first thing they say on the phone tonight is have you reset it. I'll go strawberry floating mental.

The phone line can work and not have BB. Likewise if you remove the filter the phone line will still work, just the BB connection will be strawberry floated.

And can this be fixed remotely or will it require a visitor do you think?

I think it'll need a visit to test the physical connection quality between your socket and the exchange.

Yeah will be a visit. I'd call them and basically be a dick until they send an engineer.
