Any advice?

We need internet for our new house. Previously we were with Sky and had no complaints, but we're not getting their TV anymore, and I do feel a little bit better inside knowing I don't subscribe to Sky.

Virgin seem to have a good fibre deal (and we have a Virgin line already installed so can be up and running quickly). I've had bad experiences with their internet service before in the area of Liverpool we're moving to, but I'm willing to give them another shot as they've vastly improved the service at my in-laws'. What are their traffic management restrictions like for gaming and streaming?

BT strawberry floated me over royally before and ended up on my list, but I've forgiven them now as the best deal is the best deal. Their speed hasn't always been amazing at my dad's (which is central London), but BT Sport on the cheap is an interesting sweetener...

Then there's Plusnet who are apparently quite good as well. TalkTalk are verboten.

Cant really speak for the other but Virgin dont throttle on their higher packages unless you are getting insane. And generally speaking the speeds are so high that you just wouldnt notice if they did. Customer service I cant really say as I havent had to deal with them often, though any time I have needed a guy to come round its always been pretty quick and easy to arrange.

Full disclosure; I work for Virgin and have the 200mb package.

BT is very fast where I am and haven't throttled me once since going to their superfast broadband a few years ago. I give it a right hammering as well.

I always figured throttling was a thing of the past now anyway?

Yeah most networks now have pretty considerable bandwidth, and even if they do start throttling the speeds are so much higher than just a few years back you wouldnt really notice.

I'm on BT and despite the slightly crap BT hub am fairly happy with the quality and speed of service I get.

Was previously with EE who were terrible.

I'm with Sky on their Fiber Pro package and it is brilliant. The Sky Hub is a bit meh but I use my own Wireless AP's so it isn't a biggy.

I'll be glad when they finally get rid of that Hub and replace it with the SkyQ router.

I don't get any issues with mine, it sits there fine and has for the last year or two and it just works.

It has really terrible WiFi capabilities. With no 5GHz 802.11n or 802.11ac the router can't actually deliver the speeds advertised on Fibre or Pro. The WiFi signal was ranked the worst of any of the big ISP supplied routers (thus Sky sent everyone a free bolt-on a couple years ago to try and fix it) & regularly drops out.

Compared to the BT Hub it's so antiquated it's not even funny.

I dont use the Wifi so it doesn't matter to me that Wifi is gooseberry fool, as a basic router it is ok.

I'm with Sky but don't have an issue with the wifi as my internet speed isn't fast enough for that to be a concern.

If I ever get fibre that will change, but I think that will be a couple of years away.

I've got BT Infinity one. It's fast and I got a very good deal. Something like £275 cashback and it costs me £26.99 's month. I would just go on Topcashback and HotUKDeals and see who's giving the best deals including cashback.

Some people don't like the HomeHub 5 but I haven't had any problems.

I'm with Virgin so I don't have to deal with shitty copper coming into the equation. Makes for a much more reliable service.

Vodafone do home broadband now. No caps, reasonable pricing (offer at the moment for six months free, six months Netflix, and incentives for mobile customers), and a decent router offering beamforming, dual broadcast (so you can turn the kids off and keep your own), and other neat 21st century features.

I have a simple Plusnet package. No limits on data, alright speed. I've only had to ring them once when our internet died, the customer service was excellent, very friendly and helpful.

Probably the nicest thing about them was the honesty. They sent me a cheque out last year as they said they had been over charging me for a while. I wouldn't have noticed, so it was a nice surprise to receive that in the post.

They've been owned by BT for nearly 10 years now. They've somehow made it this far without becoming a total shitfest.
