PostInternet/Laptop troubles :(
by Tramp-arse » Wed Apr 24, 2013 12:57 am

Evening,

I very foolishly used to watch football on my laptop via some dodgy websites - the result of which, I think, is that my laptop is now going mental.

A few months ago something odd would happen every time I tried to use the browser - I'd get instantly pushed onto a, clearly false, site which stated I needed to pay X amount to Scotland Yard in order to gain access to my computer again. This page would always pop up and I could find no way of getting rid of it, even virus scans failed.

I figured a reboot of some kind (please note I am pretty clueless when it comes to these types of things) would solve my problems, but surprise surprise they only got worse. Now when I turn the thing on, it won't connect to any wireless networks I have, and the trouble shooter offers no explanation why.

The laptop is actually the property of The Open University - they have a loan programme for students. When I boot it up, one of the first screens I see is an OU one, and as far as I'm aware, they appear to have 'admin' control of the system. Again, I'm not the most technically minded, so a lot of this is pure guesswork.

I realise I'm the root of my own troubles, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My OS is Windows 7.

Cheers

Anyone recommend a good site offering advice for such problems?

Google is your friend. You've got a virus. If you google what the screen says to you, there will undoubtedly be a fix. Which will probably consist of you booting into Safe mode, changing a few registry keys and then installing anti malware software.

It should be easy enough, although you may need local admin access.

I think I may have fixed it by cack-handedly restoring the system to its original factory state. Any decent, free, reliable anti-virus software out there?

Cheers, I'll have a wee look at that.
