PostiOS help: YouTube on an iPad
by jawafour » Sat Apr 01, 2017 11:34 pm

Hey, folks

Up until just now I've been able to open Safari on my iPad, set YouTube open in one tab to play music and browse the web on another tab.

Well, now the music in the YouTube tab pauses whoever I look at the other tab. It never used to do this... am I doing something daft?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks
jawa

Not sure, it's working for me. A few weeks ago I noticed that it would pause after about ten seconds when I went to another tab but I've just tried it and it's working fine.

Hmmn... it's a weird thing. Always used to work fine but tonight it has just stopped. Searching online, it seems that this may be a common thing as YouTube is trying to get people to pay for YouTube Red, which apparently allows it.

Yeah I've just researched YouTube red and it does talk about being able run in the background on mobile devices. I've just tried mine again and it's still playing in the background.

Thanks for looking, STAR. It definitely seems to be something that YouTube has done; I can stream digital radio stations in a tab with no probs - it's just YT vids that won't play. Ho-hum!

On Android you can use Firefox to play YouTube videos even when the app is in the background while you use a totally different to app or have the screen off.
Is Firefox available on iOS to see if that works?

The actual YouTube app supports "picture in picture" so you should be able to use that. Once the video is playing there is a button no it you can tap and it should "pop out" the video and it will show the vid in the bottom right f the screen while you do other stuff.

Edit: Turns out Google haven't implement this on there stuff so it doesn't do this. Sorry.

If you've got an older model iPad and have recently updated to the new iOS, it may have removed the ability to multi task it (new iOS taking up more ram).

Happened to me with my iPad 2, turned it from angreat tablet to an inconvenient slow piece of gooseberry fool over several updates.

Bumped by a spammer but I'm on mine now an the same gooseberry fool has happened, now it barely functions at times, constantly quits out apps for no reason and takes a strawberry floating age to install even a single app, usually failing to do so.

Have you figured out a way to downgrade or jaikbreak to old version at all? And at what point do banana splits stop letting you install apps because your OS is old. strawberry floating pisses me off that Apple do this with they device of the month cycle.

I have an Air 2 and Air 1 in my house and both are suffering similarly since the update. Installations definitely take a lot longer and it just quits apps for no reason. However i've not experienced an app failing to install yet.

I too hate the way they force you to upgrade by essentially making your ipad unworkable.

Are you talking about the new iOS 9 or whatever it is now, because I've had these problems pretty much since iOS 8 and successive updates.

It really sucks because I won this iPad 2 in a raffle and it was awesome when I got it for years and I'd like to use it for design apps if it were possible to do anything except browse the Internet and not expect every app switch or app open to fail sometimes 3 or 4 times in a row, it's terrible.

No way am I updating again.

I'm poor so I'm bitter that my raffle fortunes are no longer paying out.

IOS 11. I don't think you can have that on an Ipad 2 as i think they stopped supporting it at IO 9. That was when i dumped my Ipad 3 and bought an Ipad Air 2 as it had become unusable.

I see a pattern forming.

I probably should have sold mine and got a nexus when I had the chance but thy wouldn't take it because the home button was randomly unresponsive, and it's work fine since that day :fp:

Yeah it's definitely a business model. You reach a point where the device is slow and clunky, and the apps are no longer compatible with the operating system so you have no choice but to upgrade if you want to carry on.

Don't worry Google seemingly brick or ruin their devices with upgrades as well

Unless you mean nexus or pixel the updates are done by the OEMs so it's them that are nerfing it.
