We’ve swapped Rich Tea for Oreos: what happened to the UK’s dunking spirit?

According to retail analyst Kantar Worldpanel, £25.7m has been wiped off the annual sales of everyday biscuits. The nation is turning its back on dunking, and sales of traditional chocolate-covered biscuit bars, such as KitKats and Penguins, are likewise in decline.

But the news that, simultaneously, Oreo’s UK sales have risen by £12m is more difficult to digest. True, this is the year of dim-witted Brits being dazzled by cheap, tacky Americans (look at Farage toadying around Trump), but, in a world where McVitie’s chocolate digestives exist, it is flabbergasting that people are being tempted by the icky, synthetic flavours of the Oreo, that bastardised bourbon.

Oreos are oreawful. Digestives forever!

Oreos are nice but they're not really a replacement for biscuits are they?

I've tried a few Oreos in recent years; one of my nephews cannot consume milk and he has Oreos instead of biscuits. Yes... amazingly - even though the packaging shows a splash of milk - Oreos don't contain any! They do seem, to me, to taste - as The Guardians writer suggests - rather synthetic.

Unthinkable a few years ago, but not surprising when you consider there's a tonne of Budweiser advertising in movies, every American bar scene is plastered with the logo.

Their adverts are always memorable too.

Budweiser seems to be the "official sponsor" for everything these days. They seem to have successfully integrated and taken over the football market now, even though nobody would have associated Bud with football at all until recently.

Good marketing I guess?

Worth noting that Oreos have a selection of flavours that gives them diversity over Bourbons, and they're vegan-friendly. I genuinely believe that has helped boost the sales.

Also what philestine doesn't dunk an oreo.

The only reason I don't get them more often is they're expensive price per pack and they're really addictive.

Digestives are slightly sweetened but otherwise unchanged mulched cardboard that has been pressed into a disc and dried. strawberry floating rancid. They have "texture" in the same way a piece of bark does. I'll take sugar filled gunk any day of the week.

I'm not keen on digestives, but at least you can dunk them more than a rich tea bikkie, Peter Kay was right, they are a one dunk biscuit.

I don't find Oreos that appealing, I'll eat them but I don't go out to the supermarket and buy them.
