I'll have to say yes.

From a technical stand point, it was amazing at the time, as all there was before it was basic cartridge games. I didn't get to play it until just before the FFVIII release though, so for me it wasn't as big a wow factor, and I only made it onto the 2nd disc I think!

For me... FFVIII > FVII

In fairness to the technical achievements... they really were quite considerable.

It's hugely overrated. It's not even the best Final Fantasy on the PSX never mind the numerous lists it makes thanks to people who are overly sentimental about it.

There's that too. FF7 didn't really bring anything techinically revolutionary to the genre, but the way it was marketed and received by the mainstream was a revolution in RPGs itself.

FFVI > FFVII > FFX > FFV > FFVIII > FFIX > FFXII

I don't remember the earlier games enough to rank.

Gameplay wise, it's far from the best, however i've never been sucked into the story of a game as i was FF7, neither before or since.

I can't stand Final Fantasy games, so I'd have to go with "Yes".

For me:

VII > IX > VI > VIII > XII > getting punched in the face > X & X-2

Haven't properly played all the older ones, bar the odd bit of dabbling on emulator.

I've actually been replaying that again recently and it's in no way overrated. The story is still incredible even today, if a little sullied by its flawed translation work, whilst the Materia system is still one of the best magic mechanics in an RPG (and I've played a ton of them) In my eyes it has rightfully earned its legendary status, and the inevitable remake, quite simply can't come soon enough for me.

What the actual strawberry float!!!

FFX was awful!! The last 'boss' :fp:

It was okay until the end bits. I had only reached the end of FF8 before that, so was expecting some kind of insane mega boss, only to be met by an enemy that revived me if I died!! I spent hours leveling up and getting rare items/weapons to help me out

I'd also add face aids between getting punched in the face and FF10

I played FFVII on my PC and was blown away. Hadn't been hit with any hype or stuff like that and still regard it the highest regard. I even later found out I'd played the whole thing at half speed without even realising it.

Some in here have argued that it didn't do anything new and they are wrong. They should look back at FFVI and compare it to FFVII and list all the things that are different and they'll find a list as long as the differences between 2D and 3D Zelda. For games that rely as heavily on their battle system as they do their storytelling ability the use of gratuitous FMV scenes did the game wonders.

I personally loved the Materia system too although I know others preferred the Draw system of FFVIII. Personally, I found the latter to be a case of 'farming' enemies for their magic to boost my stats.

I played this game on the PS2, so I missed a lot of the hype, and the feeling of playing an RPG on disk format for the first time. I still enjoyed it a lot, the story is one of the best in any RPG, and the characters are all very memorable. But apart from having the odd bit of FMV, this game really did nothing to revolutionise the way RPGs are made. FFVI and FFIV and others had already done the whole science fiction/fantasy thing. The pre rendered backdrops might have looked good at the time, but they haven't aged well. And the 3D character models outside of battle just look NASTY. Seriously, they're just plain ugly. I know square were new to 3D, but they could have done a little better. There are countless unfinished parts of the game, and things that are impossible to work out (anyone tried to get all the toy soldiers in Junon? And how do you raise a gold chocobo again?) I could go on, but I don't want to dissect a game that I really do love. But it's by no means perfect.

Yeah, I actually hated that aspect of FFVIII. It would have been so much better, if you were only able to draw a certain amount of magic from each enemy.

FF VI is clearly the best.

I think it's revered as one of the best RPGs of all time because, for the majority of people that played it, it was the first RPG they ever played. There was no clichés yet, and everything about it was new to most. It's hard to look at it objectively, since it's unfair to say to a bunch of people "you should have enjoyed it less because X, Y and Z had already been done in FF1-6, so it was samey and generic". It was most fans first RPG, so the usual rules don't apply.

For many though, the FMVs made the game more breathtaking than simple sprites. FMVs certainly allowed 7, 8 and 9 to easily show incredible scenes that would have been impossible/not as good with the current PS1 graphics, so it definitely deserves credit (though I first seen the FF series when my mate picked up FF8, so going from the lush FMVs of 8 to the, by comparison not as impressive, stuff in 7 meant I completely missed that boat.). It was the right game at the right time, that much is obvious.

I do think it's now absolutely drowned in nostalgia and if Square ever remake FF7 it'll be a blood bath. If it's identical apart from graphics then I reckon it'll get shunned by a newer generation but if they change even the smallest of things it will cause the fanbase to explode. It sounds like an impossible balancing act, so I hope Square are up to the task!

It wasn't perfect. Skippable summons would have been nice (try fighting using Knights of Round at 1/2 speed).

I think the biggest problem for FF7's status as an untouchable game is FF8. 8 is a marmite game. There are those that love it and those that really couldn't get on with it. I fall into the latter group. 8 is better looking, has a more complex battle system and a dude with a gunsword. It should have been better than 7 by rights. Unfortunately, the characters just aren't as memorable or likeable, the plot wasn't as good, the new chocobo system was dire and there was next to no game lengthening side-quests at the end of the game. Whereas 7 had Aeris' death that enamoured me with the game, 8 had nothing of the sort. In fact, finding the super-advanced alien race which owned the entire 2nd continent was a bit of a letdown.

Try as I did to love 8, I never could bring myself to complete it (although I did get to the massive flying tower thing at the end) and just didn't get on with it as much as I did 7.
