PostIs it weird to go to the cinema by yourself?
by Ecno » Mon Oct 03, 2011 11:30 pm

Me and my girlfriend are having this discussion based on the time I went to the cinema by myself. I'd locked myself out of the house as I was on my way for a job interview and didn't have time to find my keys. After the interview which finished about 1pm I had a few hours to kill before someone came back so I went to the cinema by myself, I like films so I thought why not. In the cinema screen itself there were about 15 people probably about half by themselves. I figure there's nothing wrong with it. People watch films by themselves all the time at home and the cinema isn't really the most sociable place you sit in the dark in silence.

So was/is going to the cinema by yourself weird?

Nah, not during the day. Maybe in the evening.

This again? It's fine during the day. Less so when it's a romantic comedy or some gooseberry fool.

It depends on you I guess, I have a mate who goes all the time by himself as he works unsociable hours but I wouldn't even entertain the notion of going by myself.

Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned.

It's not weird. Especially in the situation you described, although I can imagine it making you feel quite self-conscious if you go when it's busy.

Going to the cinema with people is one of the least social, social activities too.

I went to see revolutionary road by myself one time, in between lectures. Man, that was depressing.

There's always loads of people in the cinema during the day by themselves, older people and students.

Yea, it's sitting quietly in the dark, it hardly requires a partner.

Years ago I thought it was but then I went to see star wars revenge of the with on my own and I kinda liked it. I haven't been by myself since but I'm sure I will at some point. Like u say in the day time there's actually quite a few people that go on their own either because they work shifts, nights, unemployed or smell and have no friends.

Of course it's not weird. You go there to watch a film, in the dark. You don't need someone with you to do that.

It's tougher to jerk off at the back when someone comes with you.....

I always feel a pang of pity sympathy when I see a guy watching a film by himself. He's normally wearing an anorak or a baseball cap, regardless of the weather outside.

I went on my own on Thursday to watch Jurassic Park, it's my favourite film, but I couldn't find anyone else willing to pay £8 to see a 17 year old film so went solo.

It was fine.

Going bowling by yourself though - that's weird.

Why? If it's during the day then maybe all his friends are at work or just don't fancy seeing a film he really wants to see?

I would have thought the opposite to be the case...

One benefit of people going to the cinema on their own is that they have no one to talk to so they can't ruin your experience by chatting to whoever is beside them.
Theres also the fact that if they are going to a film on their own they are definitely interested in the film so are much less likely to use their phone during the film.

I wonder do any cinemas do loners only screenings? I bet they'd be great.
