Is Live Arcade better than 360's full retail library?

PostIs Live Arcade better than 360's full retail library?
by more heat than light » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:53 am

I'm starting to think it is. I don't know if it's the ease of getting into a game rather than opening a box and putting in a disc, but I'm finding myself playing XBLA games more than the full releases. The last five weeks have been ridiculously incredible, and that's following a year in which we've had Rez HD, N+ and Ikaruga. And I know it's not great, but I am seriously addicted to Fable 2 Pub Games.

I know we've had some classic full games (Orange Box and Halo 3 spring to mind) but this is like actually owning another platform entirely. Pick up and play gaming at its very best, just like it used to be. God bless you, Live Arcade. :)

A different slice of "really good". I've been playing on XBLA a lot more than full price titles recently, too. It's a question of how much free time I have for gaming, really, and XBLA is absolutely perfect for the working man!

(Of course, the rest of the year will probably be terrible stuff like Yaris 2, and then we'll be back to complaining it's gooseberry fool...)

I love lots of the games of Live Arcade, but none of them have or ever will compare to playing games like Oblivion or Gears of War, they just provide a much more immersive kind of game than XBLA will ever be able to create.

Not in a million years.

Even if I'm only playing Sensible Soccer at the moment.

Not quite, though last month's XBLA has been better than the last few months' worth of retail releases.

A potentially more interesting question is whether PSN is better than PS3's library...

Nesh.

I like Castle Crashers, but nothing has come close to Bioshock et al.

The 360, PS3 and Wii games put together. Clearly.

In other question news, which is better: Tito, or the entire Jackson 5?

PSN has been great recently that's for sure. I've almost completed Uncharted and I intend to finish it this weekend, but I'd rather be playing Warhawk and The Last Guy.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Bung Siren, Everyday Shooter and PixelJunk Eden in there too, and you've got a lot of downloadable goodness.

I haven't got Siren, WarHawk, Booty or the Last Guy yet, ON XBLA there are several I want to get too.

I find that I still tend to buy the boxed reeases more and then end up feeling I've spent too much to justify downloads. I could save these for next years summer drought I guess.

Great, isn't it? Looks (and sounds) totally different to anything else, and there's a neat risk-reward thing going on with the size of conga line of survivors. The presentation's just wonderful, too. Amazing value for a fiver.

It's a great example of how gameplay which is essentially from the early 80s can be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The use of "powers" and the stamina bar seem to be very well balanced. I got more for my money than I was expecting TBH and yes, the presentation is very stylish.

I think everyone has to remember that MS has been really pushing XBLA recently with The Summer of Arcade, or whatever it was called.

Over the coming months I don't think we're going to get anywhere near the same treatment, but saying that there's still plenty to look forward to.
