PostIs my hard disk about to die?
by Venom » Sun Jun 13, 2010 11:35 am

Hi. Every time I start my Windows 7 PC I get a message that the C: drive "needs to be checked for consistency." So I let it go through the process and eventually Windows boots as normal. I shut down properly, I've virus checked the system, but it is now doing this HDD every time. Looking on the internet I read that I should go to a command prompt and type fsutil dirty query c: tocheck if the disk is dirty, I checked and I got the message that it is NOT dirty. Other stuff I've read is that I should go to the registry and switched this check off- but isn't the PC telling me this for a reason? So does this mean the HDD is dying and I should buy a new one, or is there anything I can do about it?

:?

EDIT: If I do need to buy one what brand is most reliable and fastest Western Digital or Seagate?

Either you're not shutting down properly or your HDD is dying.

You could try downloading Speedfan and see what your SMART monitoring report is like if your hard disk has the chip on it:

I would say Western Digital, but they're both reasonably solid makes.
