I remember always asking to play tennis at school but was told we'd be playing rugby, football or even strawberry floating softball every time. Girls got to play, but the boys didn't.

I find it a bit weird that you all think that is so expensive my parents made me play every summer, I grew up in Wimbledon, the local council use to charge £70 a week. One year we even trained at the Wimbledon ground Greg Rusedski even did an hours session at one point, he played a couple of sets with are trainer and totally destroyed him. At my local tennis court kids could rent the courts for £2 an hour.

It's still only £6 an hour in Streatham where I live now. I really hate tennis though I hated the guy training us, I started learning to canoe in the end.

Not even close to being right.

Coming from you xeno? have you not watched women's tennis? that alone puts the sport greatly higher than cricket.

Tennis is far better than cricket.
Though that's like saying second degree burns are better than third degree burns. It's true, but either way you're strawberry floated.

Tennis interests me because it is not a team a sport. You get to see two individuals going head to head and see the chemistry and emotions flowing between them. It's a much more personal struggle than team based sports. I am not a sports fan but as someone interested in arts and drama it is quite interested to see two people battle each other so intently, physically and mentally, for something they have dreamed of for years.

Baseball is much more interesting to watch than cricket.
Baseball actually ends.

Cricket is the best sport. Anyone who doesn't think so is clearly a mong too stupid to understand or too ignorant to appreciate.

I can see the appeal but I don't get how anyone can watch a whole set of matches like the Ashes doesn't the whole game run for 25 days or something.

One issue that always seems to get overlooked is the 'pack-up-and-run' factor. If your local park/court/field gets descended upon by a gang of chavs/yobs/neds/whatever you want to call them, then poor little Jimmy aged seven is going to want a game where he can just grab his stuff and leg it. If he thinks he's the next Federer and decides to head down the reccy with his bat and ball, odds are he won't make it back with both if he has the misfortune to run into any scum, which makes it all less the likely he'll be back again tomorrow. Whereas with football he's got less kit to grab, and a greater chance that he won't be on his own.

Cricket is up there with Darts and Snooker for 'Dullest thing to ever be inflicted on Television'.

Well watching it live means a day of legitimate boozing and otherwise the best way is to have TMS (the radio coverage) on, using the TV for when things are really getting interesting. There's something uniquely fantastic about a sport that can be 4 days into a match (a test match is 5 days, the Ashes is best of 5 tests, btw. There used to be unlimited tests but they don't happen any more) and all you can say is 'ooh, it's too early to say who will win'.

The Ashes can be the most exciting sport to watch on TV but sadly these days, the Aussies are just gooseberry fool.

You don't have to be rich to play it and therefore it isn't elitist! I play every week for free with a £30 racket I bought about 6 years ago.
