Hi, welcome to the forum. I think it's important to remark that there's no shame in being overweight, it's not hurting anyone else. It's cool to get motivated to be healthier, but I think it's better to do it for yourself for positive reasons, not because you feel ashamed.

I think it's more to do with our surroundings than genetics. Genetics cannot stop the fact that, if you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. But if you're surrounded by people who will feed you unhealthy but tasty foods as a means of showing you how much they love you, won't get on your case about your ever increasing weight, won't help you when you decide you've had enough and want to be healthier... well, that will put a serious kibosh on your ability to be a healthier person.

Most people strawberry float up because they cut too many calories too quickly, go on fad diets, workout for too long, and want results *now*. If it's done in a sensible way and they have the will to see it through most days, then there should be no reason for them to not find themselves in a healthier situation.

Eat 5 times a day
Cut out the junk food
Be more active
