PostIt's now even harder to get into Australia as citizenship process overhauled

BBC News wrote:Australia will make it more difficult to gain citizenship in a major overhaul of its migration process.

Aspiring citizens will undergo tougher tests on their English language skills and ability to demonstrate "Australian values", PM Malcolm Turnbull said.

Applicants must also have completed four years as a permanent resident - three years longer than at present.

The move comes two days after Australia unveiled stricter visa requirements for skilled workers from overseas.

Mr Turnbull said the changes would ensure that migrants were better integrated into the community.

"It is important that they understand that they are making a commitment to our Australian values," he said.

What are the changes?

In explaining what constituted "Australian values", Mr Turnbull said migrants must demonstrate support for religious freedom and gender equality.

"Respect for women and children ... that is a key Australian value," he said, adding domestic violence would not be tolerated.

ther changes to the citizenship process include:

- A more stringent English language test involving reading, writing, listening and speaking;

- Providing evidence of integration into the community, such as employment history, school enrolment or membership of community organisations;

- Having already been a permanent resident for at least four years;

- Allowing applicants to apply only three times, and automatically failing anyone who cheats on a test.

- When asked about reports that applicants would be quizzed on whether they supported forced child marriage or female genital mutilation, Mr Turnbull said it was important to "reinforce our values".

"If we believe that respect for women and children [is an Australian value]... then why should that not be made a key part, a fundamental part, a very prominent part, of our process to be an Australian citizen?"

Tightening rules

The requirements would apply to all new applications for citizenship, the government said.

On Tuesday, the government said it would replace a controversial visa scheme to make it harder for foreign nationals to work in Australia.

Mr Turnbull said both announcements had been made in the national interest.

The opposition Labor Party accused Mr Turnbull of making announcements for political gain.

"It seems a little odd to me that you would actually ask people whether or not they are going to obey the law when they already pledge to obey the law," said Labor senator Penny Wong.

BBC News wrote:Australia will introduce stricter visa requirements for skilled workers from overseas, the government said.

The 457 visa programme is used mainly to hire foreign workers in the restaurant, IT and medical industries - the majority came from India, the UK and China.

But PM Malcolm Turnbull said it would be abolished to prioritise the recruitment of Australian nationals.

Critics of 457 said Australian workers lost out to foreign counterparts.

In its place, two new temporary visas will carry additional requirements and draw from a smaller list of eligible professions.

"The new system will be manifestly, rigorously, resolutely conducted in the national interest," Mr Turnbull said on Tuesday.

According to government statistics, 95,758 people were living in Australia on 457 visas last year, with the highest proportion coming from India (24.6%), the UK (19.5%) and China (5.8%).

Well, it mentioned 'displaying Australian values', so it was implied.

Oh I agree it definitely is. Australia is well known to be a xenophobic country.

It was just interesting how Lotus jumped in with the rolleyes when nobody had mentioned it.

Australia is free to determine how relaxed or how strict their immigration process. What a nice amount of flexibility to have.

Don't see the appeal of Australia myself:

Too hot
Too many animals that can kill you
Too many gap year/going travelling Brits clogging up the nice areas
Too much censorship with videogames and films
Horrifically annoying accents
Bottom the planet so could fall off at any moment

A lot of Brits want to go to Australia.
A lot of Australians want to come here.

Putting aside an obvious trade deal, I wonder why such a 'grass is greener' mindset seems to exist between our two countries. It was even turned into a daytime TV show (think Escape to the Country).

Something Down Under? I've watched that sometimes and it really makes me want to emigrate. Previously I couldn't because I didn't want to leave my parents in case they needed me. Now they've passed away, I'm too old to emigrate I think (after 45 I think you have to buy a business) and I don't think my son would want to come so I wouldn't want to leave without him. :(

Maybe in the next life.

I wouldn't have thought it was that interesting, as it has been fairly common over the last couple of years in response to discussions around countries wanting control over who enters their country. I assumed the same would be the case here, unless of course it's only bad when the UK does it.

Also, I think in response to Australia making it more difficult for UK citizens to enter their country, Channel 5 should shun the negotiations around the re-contracting of Neighbours that they're currently looking at. That'll learn 'em.

That's what I found interesting. Your usual response to a country or politician being called racist or xenophobic is to roll your eyes and say "no racism here at all folks! Sick of everything being about race!". It was interesting to see you bring it up first.

:lol:

Australia has a similar amount, I can assure you.

If you love beaches, sunshine and sometimes ridiculously hot weather then Aus is perfect, otherwise there's not really that much special about living there.

My advice to anyone wanting to emigrate abroad would be to rent a house and live there for a few months first. What you see on TV or on a 2 week holiday is the romanticised version.

Except that, the more complicated, convoluted and intentionally hard the process becomes, the more illegals you're going to get. :shifty:
Jupiter is in your sun sign this week, making it pretty crowded in there, what with Jupiter being the largest of the planets and all.

It's a shame they didn't have that in place 200 or so years ago...
