Anyone here had jaw surgery before? To realign your upper or lower jaws. Just wondering what your thoughts are about it?
I am soon to get braces to correct an overbite for £2k. But the orthodontist suggested I'd get jaw surgery too to move my lower jaw forward. But its definitely something I don't want to do because of the longish recovery time and associated pain.

Instead I am just having two upper tooth's extracted to create space to move my upper front teeth back so they line up with my lower set of teeth.

You could always ask Mike Tyson to rearrange it for you. I'm sure he would oblige for free.

It depends on the severity of the overbite, I suppose. My orthodontist made me wear a upper mouth gum shield thing for about a year, that did a decent job.

yeah looks terrible but its free! The NHS doesn't consider it as cosmetic surgery.

Yeah I think mine is server enough to warrant it. But then again I had another consultation a few years ago and that orthodontist didn't even mention jaw surgery.

I had over 5 years of orthodontic treatment as my teeth were so strawberry floated (dat overbite and inbreeding). I bet they would have done this to me if it was more commonplace back then, strawberry float that.

My bother had his lower jaw done. He was on liquid food for months. He had to have his jaw wired shut during that time too.

Funny as strawberry float for me, but you'll be in pain and inconvenienced for quite some time.

Sounds terrible. I really think I will give it a miss and just do with moving my top teeth back instead.

He has a proper chin now, so that's something.

Just thought I'd update this thread

I ended up getting braces and 2 upper pre-molars extracted as mentioned. This was back in October and so far my lower teeth have all straightened up. My top teeth are the same still with two gaps where my pre-molars were.

But now I am having a change in heart...... :( I want to go the surgery route to get my lower jaw moved forward and like Fatal Exception mentioned above...a proper chin.

Before this I had no idea that the fault lied within my underdeveloped jaw/chin. Even when I was told this in the consultation the fear of surgery and the fact that for the past few years since my first consultation where the first orthodontist didn't mention jaw surgery. Made me assume surgery wasn't necessary and I was never self conscious about my recessed chin.

Also researched the surgery more and its not as bad as I thought. Even that video of lower jaw surgery doesn't look that bad. Recovery should only be 3-4weeks also. It seems quite a common procedure too and loads of people get it done of all ages and genders. At first I thought of it as someone more as plastic surgery and just didn't think it was for me. The only down side is possibility of losing sensation/nerves but theres always some risk to any surgery.

Lately I have been very self conscious about my side profile and I keep looking at people's chins/jaws.

I'm just not that confident in what I should do about it.

The fact that I already had 2 pre-molars extracted. Although I have some rather redundant upper wisdom tooth that could possibly be used to fill the gap if they are brought forward...not sure though if this would be a procedure that my orthodontist would think is right. Or get false teeth?

I know the next step is to contact my orthodontist but I just feel a bit stupid and guilty for wanting to change my treatment plan. That I will create a lot of fuss/annoyance for my orthodontist etc. I bet everyone else just get on with treatment and there me again change my mind and creating a lot of hassle :(

I just feel that I may have missed GOOD opportunity. Every was laid out for me: surgery, good jaw health (no more jaw clicking etc), nice straight teeth
whereas I ended up going for the 2nd best option...

I've just composed an email to my orthodontist but will wait until Tuesday to send it. As the practice is most likely closed until then. Will also give me a final few days to think over it.

you gotta do what you think is gonna make you happy man.

its a big decision either way. Although, like the first video could have the teeth straightened then the jaw done at a later date?

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Thanks guys! Yeah it is a big decision and I keep changing my mind. I'll have a good think about it first and maybe have a consultation with a surgeon before making any decisions.

Yes teeth are positioned and straightened before treatment. My teeth are current getting straightened but not for surgery. So its this that I may change.

I'll see. I mean so many people live with overbites, over jets, underbites, big chins, small chins without getting any surgical intervention because they aren't getting any discomfort, breathing problems or jaw pains so sometimes I feel maybe I'm getting carried away a bit. As I don't have any discomfort currently although my a orthodontist did warn me it may happen when I get a bit older so surgery now could prevent it in the future. But that isn't for sure and was only his prediction.
So I feel a bit guilty for getting surgery mainly for cosmetic reasons :s but then again so do many people.

Also I'm a bit concerned about time off work, I dunno if I'll stay in my current job or location. So to get surgery in the future would be getting 3-4 weeks off work. I dunno what employers would think of that...

I'll keep this thread updated with whatever I end up doing.

If you do need time off work how detailed would the doctors note be? Wouldn't it just be something like "No1FFF must take 3-4 weeks off work as he needs to recover from a surgery to his Jaw". I've never seen one, but would they specify the exact reasons why you had the surgery? I mean would they say, this was mostly a cosmetic procedure, or mostly for medical reasons etc?

I don't think they have to put the specific reasons, largely because it's none of the employer's business.
