Wii U version, I may get a Switch for Xmas, going to let some games actually be released for it and see what the general consensus is around battery life, VC, online etc before I take the plunge. If Breath of the Wild is that damn good then I may also pick it up on Switch.

You're talking a lot of sense, kaz. I'm starting to waver on the Switch as, like you, I have enough games to play without splashing out on a new console. Hmmn... gotta mull this over.

Jawa, you've just bought two memory cards. You're buying the console, playing it for a bit, realise there is nothing really out until Mario and let it gather dust, just accept it

Until your battery runs out.

I think Nintendo stated the battery would last around 3 hours when playing Zelda...

I have external batteries and also when I'm out and about I likely won't have 3 hours in one sitting to play.

It'll be on train journeys, then I'll charge it at work.

3 hours battery life covers my 2 hour return train journey that I take about every two weeks, and easily covers my 15 minute commute to/from work. The main question is will it last on sleep between the morning and evening commute.

Realistically for me, 3 hours seems quite a long time to play Zelda when out and about anyway.

A lot of trains have plug sockets under the seats these days, I'd just put a phone charging cable in my manbag if I were taking it on a long journey like that. Or buy one of those phone external batteries.

I think it makes a lot if sense to buy it on Swith if you are going to be playing away from home often (or you don't have a Wii U obviously). Most of my portable play is on the sofa however so it's another factor that doesn't apply to my specific situation.
