I'm interested in this thought, Red! If you are with someone who may feel uncomfortable with swearing, does your annoyance rise because you feel swearing is just different words?

I just think people who are shocked by the use of certain words are a bit lame and repressed. It seems very pearl-clutchy. Relax! Have feelings! Don't sweat over using the word strawberry float, for strawberry floats sake.

I don't swear all the time and only in front of my wife. But it is regular enough that I'm now consciously replacing "gooseberry fool" with "sugar", etc so as not to pollute the little one's vocabulary.

"Berk". I'm familiar with that term and have sometimes used it. Hmmn...

Oh my! I know a bit of Cockney Rhyming but I had never heard of this one!

I try not to swear much really, although when I'm exasperated with a situation I do sometimes say "ffs" or how utterly dog rubbish the situation is.

Fair enough, Red. I get your thinking!

Ah! Another GRcadian who is changing the odd word here and there when kids are around. Probably a good move, Zilnad, as the little 'uns pick up on *everything* .

I would add that I don't care if other people swear, although it can be a bit excessive if its more expletives than not!

Yeah, I can relate to that, Robbo.

An additional thought has come into my mind about swearing... I think the impact of a swear word may depend upon who is saying it. If someone whom you know swears a lot than the words don't really mean too much; but if someone swears and they don't normally, this stands out as quite an attention-grabber.

I was talking about this yesterday actually.

Watching the F1 and they played a radio clip of a driver not being happy and swearing before sky could cut away from it or bleep it.

The hand wringing, pearl clutching "we are so sorry for the language used" apology that the presenters have to make is just pathetic.

Oh no! Someone said strawberry float in the heat of the moment! It's the decline of civilisation!

Load of shite.

And some people really need to take a look at themselves if just over hearing a work like strawberry float being used (even in an appropriate context) makes them turn into Helen Lovejoy.

Being brought up by my mum means I swear a lot. Every other word is normally "strawberry float", which is hilarious seeing as her mum literally never swears whatsoever, unless she's driving and someone cuts infront of her. Hearing "bastard" come out of my religious nans mouth always has me laughing.

My secondary school was predominantly Muslim girls, so I used to make up swears instead so I didn't offend anyone. My favourite at the time was "ah rats" (to me meaning "ah gooseberry fool") It's a habit that's gotten a lot worse over time, with me shouting stuff like "you donkey testicle!" On discord whilst playing mario kart.

Made-up swears... I don't think that has been mentioned so far and it's a good call, Tsunade. Mario Kart night sounds pretty wild nowdays! .

Also, when it comes to the word "banana split" I've heard that it's a term of endearment in Australia. No idea if it's true or not but it's what I've heard before.

I feel that people who swear a lot should cut back on it
I feel that people who don't swear should try it out
I feel that people should swear a lot more

None of these. I don't care either way.

I sometimes use the C word as a term of endearment, if I really don’t like you I’ll call you a dick.

The C word in an Irish accent doesn’t sound as offensive imo.

Not even sure why, perhaps just because it's less versatile than strawberry float with the ability to add - ed or - ing to it and much more likely to be used in confrontational situations.

I will admit, it's a word i almost never use, it just such an unpleasant curse.

I will admit, it was used to good effect during that In Bruges scene.

I'm now gonna have to trawl through your past streams to see which one I was, Cumberdanes. Maybe both! ;-).
