Do you swear very much?

Swearing! It can be quite divisive; some people don't like to hear it whilst others like to ramp it up.

Is swearing something that you regularly do or is it more of an occasional thing? Select the voting options that reflect your thinking about swearing and then turn the air blue in the comments.

I had the thought for this topic because I have a neighbour who seems to swear every other word; just in typical conversation and not in an angry manner.

I don't really swear too often when other people are around but I do swear to myself if, say, I drop something or muck something up whilst on my own. Oh, and when I see some football results.

The GRcade swear filter is one of my most-loved things about the forum. I have occasionally said "float" and "strawbin" IRL  .

You need an option for "I never swear in front of others but swear to myself quite a bit under my breath or in private".

Ah! Our posts crossed and it seems that we both do this, Imrahil. I'm wondering what this action says about our mindset... perhaps it's better not to know!

I used to swear a lot, but having a kid has meant cutting it out a lot.

I curse, but only if i need to (for example, i stub my toe and it hurts like hell, or someone does something so annoying it makes me say ffs). I generally don't do it though, as i often hear people who say strawberry float multiple times per sentence (when it's not even needed) and it just sounds a bit gooseberry fool tbh.

I guess that kids do tend to pick up vocabulary and conversation styles from home. I recall one of my older nephews, when he was aged around seven and I was looking after him whilst his parents where out, asking me "Why is swearing bad?" It kinda stumped me as he went on to say "But they're just words". I just said something like "Yes, but they're not nice words to say" and he - perfectly understandably, really! - didn't look too convinced.

All the time, unless there are kids or customers within earshot.

It can be tricky, can't it? I don't really mind people swearing but it can be a bit much when there's a lot of it. I guess that "too much" point is gonna vary according to preference!

Fair play, SEP! I'm wondering if swearing acts as a form of "stress management" in some cases; that the act of swearing is a way of letting off steam or frustration? Maybe this differs from person-to-person.

It's weird because I think your nephew is correct. They are just words and the "I don't like to hear swearing" thing is really weird when you think about it. There's no real reason why one word should be worse than another.

But I don't want to be judged by teachers/other parents if my kid is dropping F bombs at school, so I behave around him.

I don't really notice when other people say swear words a lot vs. when they don't. I definitely don't have an opinion on whether people should swear more or less! It's just an emphatic form of language.

I guess my natural pattern of speech leads me towards using more mild swear words, but using them quite frequently -- like "that was shit" or "they were being a dickhead".

But I try to avoid words that might be perceived by some as slurs (like "bitch").

Obviously I would never swear around children. I do think I would find it quite funny if I heard a child swearing for emphasis, but I would tell them off if they were using those swear words to be nasty or rude. The behaviour I would want to intervene on and change would be them being mean, not necessarily them swearing. That's just my personal opinion though.

If something is annoying me, yes.

My wife once joked that she was going to make sure that "For strawberry floats sake" ends up on my gravestone.

At least I think she was joking.

Swearing is a social taboo, but one that actually gets wired in to our brains. For example swearing actually helps to reduce pain. Coupled with swearing being common across cultures this suggests swearing is a useful part of human language, but that usefulness derives from being seen as "bad" language!

All the time if I'm not in a work context or around young kids. Got no time for people who find it offensive.

People who substitute other words for swearing are the worst.

I think that, logically, that point is spot-on. Although... then again, if that were the case then why say the swear word rather than a more standard term? I wonder if it's because the idea of saying a "bad" word lets off more steam?

I never knew about that "size command" hack to get swear words past the filter! Outside-the-box thinking, site!
