Postjawa asks... how are you feeling about GR?

Hello, GRcadians! I'd like to be very clear about my suggested approach to posting in this thread, beyond the standard GRcade posting rules:

> Lets present our thoughts in a constructive and positive way; please share alternative ideas or approaches if you are highlighting an aspect that you think could be improved
> Lets avoid any form of slating of individuals
> Lets be respectful of the team of directors, technicians, moderators and other folk who put in time, effort, money and love to enable GRcade to operate

My thinking is that we could end up with a couple of ideas that we could consider taking forward to help GR become even better. It'd be a terrible shame if the thread had to be locked because a few folk got carried away, so please respect the above guidelines if you choose to post here.

Okay... is there something that frustrates you and you think it could be improved? Perhaps you have taken a break from GR and you're comfortable to talk about how that situaton could be avoided in future? Maybe you have a fantastic idea for new content that you're thinking of introducing to GR? Lets go!

You don’t count Karl in those rules though do you? Really? For FFS Jawa. :x

I know people get wound up on issues that are discussed on the boards, but I think we are remarkably civil and calm with each other, especially baring in mind the absolute political chaos we are currently living through. The country really is split down the middle at the moment, we should probably be far more at each others throats than we actually are.

I am happy with GRcade, but I don’t let things that happen on the board stress me out in real life. Except for Glowy’s vile comments in the football league thread (Glowy :x ).

The one thing I would change is (as ever!) the lack of new members. The forum is a lot lot quieter than it used to be and I fear that it will only get more so as the current members drift away or start dying off.

Just putting this here for later, probably about 5 pages or so.

Weil's Disease. The silent, but wet killer.

For what it's worth I stay out of the politics threads for the most part. Unless something truly massive has happened (Referendum being a perfect example) I don't have the time or patience for the bickering and arguing that goes on in them. Especially as I'm not the best at arguing and people in there tend to be far more knowledgable on these subjects than I am.

The rest of the board seems much as it always does. Busy in places, but quiet in others.

As for the lack of new members, we've seen a handful in the past few months, mostly from SONM and the streaming we do. The problem is getting them to stick around and to branch out.

I did think about whether I was possibly being too naive in creating this thread, but I'm genuinely hopeful that we can pop up a few thoughts and maybe lower some of the factors that people get frustrated by.

I must admit that I tend to avoid the political threads and a few of the other topics where opinions vary to huge degrees; I don't have anything against those discussions but the themes are too charged for my personal preference. I get the impression that most participants in those threads are comfortable with the rough-and-tumble that goes on there!

It's a shame that you feel like that, Falsey - I had the idea that there were threads here that you seem to quite like posting in now and again? You have a bit of banter with some folk, so it can't be that *everyone* is boring?

Yeah I get that, a lot of us in the more political threads have years of experience dealing with each other and it probably looks a lot nastier than it actually is. It gets heated sometimes of course but that’s not a thing unique to GRcade, every website, pub conversation and family meal has almost come to blows over politics/religion at some point.

It’s a hard balance to strike between those that like to get into political arguments and those that would like to talk politics without any arguing and I don’t think there is a solution. By banning any disagreement, you would kill the thread dead (I don’t mean you would personally ban it!).

Most of the people I chat with here I chat with off here too. They are the lucky, chosen few.

I still like this place. For the most part, people behave pretty well and I think between us we do a good job of becalming the worst aspect of any board of this type, ie the rampant fanboyism. You know who I mean.

A change of desk position (so everyone can see my screen), and Poser Jr have curtailed the time I can spend on here, and the time I can spend gaming, respectively.

But there are a lot of very, very good people on this board, many of whom I'd be happy to know IRL.

The lack of updates in the Babe Thread genuinely upsets me.

Aside from that though, I love this place and would change very little. Perhaps the very long posts replying to certain individuals in the various political/current event threads are a bit tiresome and hard to follow, but who am I deny people their fun?

Most of my complaints are well documented though so won't go over old ground, the only thing that irk's me is not all of them have been dealt with to my knowledge. On the whole most of you guys are great, I genuinely only hate about 3 of you, the rest I'd easily have a pint with. :shifty:

I've never put this in the depression thread but I've looked in it a couple of times (not a sufferer fortunately, more out of curiosity) and it's always nice to see people here genuinely helping each other out.

I mostly stick to a few threads and don't venture elsewhere, the regulars in those are all good folk, apart from some debates escalating to petty name calling I don't have any complaints.

1. The Gaming folder is a complete, jumbled mess. I know the catch-all one-folder system is 'the way it's always been', but I just can't be arsed sifting through all the stuff that doesn't interest me. For a supposedly specialist gaming forum to have 1 gaming folder (with everything including the kitchen sink stacked on top of each other) seems bizarre to me, but hey ho. I'll just carry on ignoring it.

2. The [DISCUSSION] tag implemented here is one of the biggest facepalms I've ever come across in all my years of foruming. Every other place I've ever discussed politics on has never felt a need to do such a ridiculous thing, but sometimes I feel this forum is in a strange little bubble of its own. It's easily the weirdest forum I've come across in that regard. Again, it's existence is the reason I do my political chat elsewhere.

Both the above have been discussed to death before though, so I'm not really sure what's to be gained from bringing it up again, but - coming from someone who's never really become a major contributor at Grcade and has always rather looked at things from the outside - it's just my 2 cents.

I like GRcade. Yes, we've talked about almost everything there is to talk about, which means we often end up going round in circles, referencing years-old jokes, and descending into surrealism and the absurd in an effort to come up with something new to talk about. But this describes my relationship with my IRL friends who I've known for years and years too. I think it's a natural state you hit when two people are very close, so it's amazing that the 100 or so here (there really are still about 100 regulars, I counted a while back!) have all found that groove with each other.

This is weird because we chat sometimes yet I'm easily one of the most cringe posters on the board? ;)
