I get all of those points. I'm just happier on console. I can put up with the framerates, resolution and load times for better communities, value for money, ease of use, etc. I also like to physically own a game which I know is actually less convenient but I like to collect.

I haven't even started this generation yet, so hopefully not too far down the road... I haven't even played on a PS4 or Xbox, and while I'm interested in the PS4, I've just got too much else to play. Will also get a Switch at some point, but that's at a different stage.

I'm pretty happy with my PS4Pro. I hate Sony's digital download pricing, but it is possible to pick up significant bargains if you can wean yourself off buying new releases (I think its called deferred gratification). I still don't have a 4K HDR TV and I have no plans to get one any time soon. The Pro works perfectly well on my bog-standard HDTV and most games look really very good to me. I'm glad I bought into the Pro and I think I'll get a few years out of the thing yet before it becomes obsolete. I mean, I still have my XBox 360 hooked-up and I enjoy playing on that - and it's a 2008 model. How it hasn't red-ringed on me is a total mystery.

I wouldn't say consoles offer better value for money and would question ease of use. All of the games I have are through Steam and they just work.

Yes?

Consoles certainly don't offer better value for money on the games. Ease of use? Guess that's down to the individual.

Just over half way.

PS5 and "Xbox Two" should launch in 2020, if DigitalFoundy's predictions are correct.

Nintendo's new direction excites me the most and I think they'll fill the gap between PS4-PS5 for me if they continue to produce games in the same league as Zelda BOTW and Mario Odyssey.

I got my PS4 at launch and would welcome a PS5 if it was truly another generational leap like we saw from PS1 > PS2. As that's not going to happen, I'm happy to keep chugging along for another few years. I do think this generation is going a bit stale, the fact that the most excited I've been about games in a while was the release of the SNES Mini speaks volumes. Pining for a simpler time, with less load times, updates, DLC, loot boxes etc. It's all getting a bit tiresome.

Don't really see the point of the Pro in all honesty, but then I haven't got a 4K tv so maybe I'm just mad jelly.

This is the thing that makes me worried about the inevitable digital future. The pricing once Sony and Microsoft have a proper monopoly is going to be awful.

We really need governments to force some competition into digital console games.

I'm almost certain that PS5 and "Xbox Two" will have a UHD Blu-ray SKU option

I still don't think poorer countries will have fast, reliable broadband come 2028.

It's going to be interesting to see how the next gen hardware improves of the One X.
I'm expecting only a tiny upgrade to the gpu (7tf against the one x's 6tf) with most of the effort put into upgrading the CPU which they can massively upgrade and still be nowhere near to PC cutting edge hardware. Even if they have a budget option 2018 pc cpu that will still absolutely destroy the One X cpu (a mid range version would be amazing but that's maybe asking a bit much) and make the overall hardware more balanced. In terms of memory I think maybe 16gb with 11 available for games but they may stick with the 12gb of the One X.

For the manufacturers to be able to entice consumers to buy new hardware there has to be a USP. For next-gen I think that will be true 4K 60fps gaming (for all games) and a better capability to play VR and AR games.

Sony is no rush to change generations as they are making a profit on PS4 hardware and have such big marketshare so it's in their interest to protract the switch for as long as possible. Microsoft cannot launch a new-gen console by themselves so my feeling is this gen will go on for a bit longer. Two years is too soon, I'm thinking 2020 and 2021.

You're saying a new machine in 2020 priced at £350 will only have a 7TF GPU?

I'm trying to be realistic.
I think the upgrade to the cpu will have more impact so needs more of the available budget spent on that area.
a 7tf gpu will be good enough to do 4K with most of the upgrade being to things like highly upgraded physics and making sure all games run at 60 fps.
Visuals are not the problem now we have decent gpu hardware that can do great things it's the rest of the hardware that needs an upgrade.

I think the £350 price point is what might change and there will be better but more expensive hardware with contracts that cover the console, online subscription and monthly games with various tiers that give just the basics, two new games a month up to all new releases.

New (next gen) consoles will be expensive according to Digital Foundry.

Technology isn't advancing fast enough and prices are remaining high.

This.

I live in a decent sized town in the UK (Cheltenham) and the best broadband I can get is about 3Mbps - downloading a current gen game (averaging say 30GB, although some are getting MUCH bigger now) takes me multiple days of constant downloading.

We are years away from a digital only console being viable in the "developed" world, let alone globally. The infrastructure is just not improving with enough speed - even if game sizes stayed constant which they absolutely will not.

UHD/4K drives are really cheap to manufacture so no need to Abandon them yet.

I live in Cheltenham and was getting about the same for a while with Sky. Switched to Virgin and it's around 50mbps on average Wi-Fi for the PC, dropping during peak times. Hitting up to 113mbps on average hard wired with the PS4 and X1.

That's on Virgin's 200mb package. Still not as fast as I would like, or it as it should be, but much better.
