The description is literally "A mechanism with a simple key hole"

It's also in a really obvious location along the ground level of the City of Tears (I don't actually think you can avoid seeing it) and the mechanism is next to a very clearly sealed off entrance in the floor (light is glowing out of it).

You still then need to get a simple key, but there are multiple keys in the game, one of which can be found on the way into the City of Tears and one for sale in Dirtmouth that is very hard to miss unless you never go to the shop.

So basically I disagree completely :P

That means I was looking at the wrong doodad after I googled the answer, which tells me two things:

- I need to read things more carefully
- There are a lot of doodads.

I had no issue with the location of the key, in fact I'd already used one of them to unlock something else (the witch who returns your 'souls' (or whatever the currency is called) after you die, I think) but still...there was no indication that the key was the...key to progression given that the only other use for it was totally optional. It's like the mega-hard platforming bits...the game teaches you that these are all optional, a way to gain more resources, but at one point there's one that's completely mandatory which I skipped over many times as...I thought it was optional.

I just don't think my brain works the way the game wants it to!

And I agree with this.
When I found the shopkeeper, he said about opening up a shop in Dirtmouth, so naturally I checked out the shop next time I was in Dirtmouth. I saw a Simple Key among the items for sale. When I saw the description ORKN mentioned above I was like "oh a simple lock, must need that simple key".

This game about exploration rewards players who explore. Funny that.

I definitely don't think you should play the game with the intention of skipping optional content because you will (as evidenced) miss things, so perhaps that is the biggest difference. Unless you're speedrunning it's not a game where you can just take the main route and ignore everything else - which is completely at odds with standard AAA open world game design.

This sounds good, Ironhide! I recall that you were considering if the controller would be of benefit to you. It'd be great to hear more once you've had a chance to set the equipment up, dude.

I've been making an effort to get back into playing more games in the last few months, I think I've completed more in that time than I have in the past couple of years combined. It's been mostly older games I've wanted to get around to for a while though, I think the only 2018 games are A Way Out and God of War which I'm currently going through. I had a fun time with the former, I'm not sure I'd even call it a good game but it's obviously elevated by the hilarity that can come with co-op, and it walks an absurd line between having you laugh at it but also along with it in a way that, whether intentional or not, is really endearing. God of War started a little slow but it clicked after more of the exploratory elements opened up, it's a quality production from top to bottom and they've done a great job of making Atreus one of its strongest assets when he could have very easily been insufferable.

I think the highlight of the games I've played this year has been Yakuza 0. I was expecting to enjoy it, but I didn't anticipate falling in love with the story and characters as much as I did. The combat can admittedly get repetitive over such a lengthy game but personality goes a long way with me and Yakuza has more of that than possibly any other game I've ever played.

Other games I completed:

Planescape: Torment - Deserving of its reputation as one of the best written games of all time.
REmake - Single rooms of this game are more atmospheric than many entire games, it still looks gorgeous too.
Resident Evil 2 - It was my first time playing through and it absolutely holds up. I'm really looking forward to the remake.
HITMAN (2016) - Still undecided as to whether I prefer it to Blood Money but it's a blast and a great foundation for the sequel to build atop.
Wolfenstein: The New Order, Old Blood & New Colossus - B.J. Blazkowicz being one of the most nuanced protagonists in gaming is awesome and hilarious.
Max Payne 1, 2 & 3 - I had played MP3 before but the others were a first. I understand why the third game left some people sour but I still enjoyed it all over again, mainly for how satisfying the shootbang is. The first two games definitely have more charming writing though, maybe it's just my general bias against Rockstar's storytelling but I get the impression they think they're stuff is more insightful than it actually is ("this place was like Baghdad with G-Strings" :dread:)
F.E.A.R. - Best Matrix game.

Yakuza 0-K2 are the main ones. Only started the series in the summer but they're already firmly in my favourite series and looking forward to the remasters coming out. I'd pick 3-6 up otherwise, but I probably do need a bit of a break to play other games.

Also put about 250 hours into Monster Hunter World and will likely keep going back to that when I have some downtime between games. It's my first MH game, so I'm not feeling the small roster as much as some, but I do wish they'd announce a big dump soon. Hopefully TGS gives something.

Octopath Traveler is a fantastic game. Everyone should play it, it's brilliant. Get on it, it's good. Music is 10/10.

Also I guess God of War was good. Looking forward to seeing where that goes now.

Overall it was a pretty decent time.

I like this assessment

It's mechanically janky and unpolished but I'll happily call it a good game because the experience is much more than just the mechanics.

I think the following are all the games I've put significant time into this year (though I might be missing a couple). Bloodborne, Stardew Valley and Destiny 2 are all games I've had for a while (in the case of Bloodborne and Destiny 2, since launch) and didn't really play at all until this year.

Dying Light
Gran Turismo Sport
Civilization VI: Rise and Fall
Bloodborne
God of War
Statik
Stardew Valley
Lumines Remastered
Fifa 18
Destiny 2
Marvel's Spider-Man

If I had to pick my favourite at the moment...it might well be Spider-Man. All of them are pretty good in their own way, but for me Spider-Man tops the list.

I think the games I have most enjoyed this year (that were actually released on the console in question this year), have been Hand of Fate 2, Shenmue HD and West of Loathing.

Even though I really enjoyed HoF2 I still stopped paying before the actual end (I suppose I may to return to it), which kind of tells me that I really do have a hard limit on the number of hours I can play a game for and still genuinely not tire of it.

I did finish the other 2, but they were probably less than 15 hours each (WoL certainly was).

Detroit: Become Human has me hooked back on video games after a very long hiatus.

Now swinging around New York with Spider-Man. Might start playing S2 of Telltales' Batman and Life Is Strange Chloe edition along with Spider-Man.

Spider-Man is a delight but the combat isn't as complex as Batman's Arkham series. If they are doing a sequel, I expect that the combat would be refined a lot more.

Will do.

I need to check it there's any compatibility issues with some of the setup (mainy whether the adaptive controller will actually recognise the mouth operated mouse/joystick but I think it should as it doesn't require any drivers or software).

For me my favourite gaming has been with Jazzem and Matt as that's been genuinely great fun. Also playing games with Earfolds, jawa , Grum and more have been great too, just played less games with them than the former two fucknuts.

Games I've enjoyed most this year have been:

Iconoclasts. Loved it, great game. It's an indie metroidvamia styled game.

Overcooked 2, awesome fun with the missus.

Rocket League with people I've mentioned has been great.

As has playing Retro games in co-op with Jazzem.

I've also been playing Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. Played Dawn of Sorrow amdissed this, so yeah. It's ace.

I was wondering about what my GOTY could be and my thinking hasn't really changed from the above. The whole experience of playing through the storyline of Night in the Woods was wonderful, whilst the pace and excitement of OnRush was a genuine rush. For me, it's still between those two... unless '76 can impress enough to make a late bid for the title.

Of the new releases this gen, and looking at time played, I've probably enjoyed Conan Exiles and PCars 2 the most.

I was thoroughly enjoying AC Origins until the Ubi-fatigue kicked in, but I will count it as it is very good and I will return to it at some point no doubt.

Really enjoyed completing Batman: Arkham Asylum again.

For retro Might & Magic VII has seen me sink a lot of time into it.

GOTY? Having not played many new release from this year I honestly couldn't say.

I've seen you mention Conan a few times, Gem - shamefully, I bought it but have barely touched it. I'm currently back into Fallout 4 but Conan could be next up!

Granted haven't played it much since the beginning of summer, but yep I do like it. Can't say it would be everyone's cup of tea, though.
