I love the iMac, but if anything fails, you’re faced with replacing the lot. A Mini with a separate (albeit inferior) screen is a much more sensible option.
Blimey! I imagine that system software updates are a thing of the past a with a system of that age, rinks? I was pretty frustrated when Apple stopped providing updates for my iMac when it was around six years old. I've had two iMacs and my first one failed due to - I think - a faulty graphics processor; the screen often appeared as just bands of coloured lines. Even so, I have found them to be very reliable in general terms; I have had maybe three system crashes in fifteen years of iMac use.
I've no idea what I'd get if (when) my current iMac fails. The Mac Mini does look neat. In a dream world I'd like to get another iMac but I'd have a hard time justifying the cost; I'd probably end up getting a pretty basic PC laptop.
