Which editions of games do you buy?

Deluxe... Gold... Standard... and later... Ultimate. So many editions of games nowdays!

Big game releases often have an expensive edition that allows you to play on release date ("x days early") rather than the other editions that cost less but delay your ability to play them.

I am often tempted to get the Pass if one is available; I kinda feel that if I don't, I haven't got the "complete" game. I won't pay full price for the pass though - I'll either get the Gold edition or wait until the pass is available at a cheaper price.

Extra costumes and things always draw me in!

I haven't ever paid for a Deluxe ("early access") version, though; nowdays that does feel to be a "beta test" version imho, with tech problems often impacting the "early access" period.

I usually play Nintendo and indie games and skip all of this nonsense.

It is quite funny how Nintendo sometimes posts an article (on Switch news or their website) in which DLC is presented as some strange new approach that gamers perhaps won't be aware of  . Even though they've had passes/DLC available four years now!

I tend to go for deluxe/complete versions with any season passes but I wait on sales so they are a lot cheaper. By the time I pick them up, not only is all the content available from the start but any bugs/issues are usually patched out.

9/10 the usual standard edition. I try not to pre order anymore and I don't care too much about extra's anymore. Only game I have pre ordered the deluxe version is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2
RACE | Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

I feel that this may now be the best approach, Milner. Bigger games often have issues at launch and drop in price... it makes sense to wait, really.

Yeah, up until four years ago I was totally sucked into pre-order culture; I didn't want to "miss out". Subsequently I have changed and rarely pre-order anything now.

Generally I’ll buy the standard version, and pick up any DLC on a selective basis when it gets discounted (usually well before I’ve finished the main game!). The exception is Assassin’s Creed games, where I get the Gold edition because I know I’ll want the DLC as soon as it’s released. I never buy any editions that cost more just for adding cosmetic nonsense.

it depends on the game and what they're offering

I don't believe that I have every bought anything other than a standard edition of a game. I have little interest in the kind of additional crap that gets thrown in to collectors editions and the like. If I like a game enough to play the DLC I'll wait and purchase the DLC when it's a good deal down the line.

But buying games is relatively rare for me now, I've got PS Plus and Game Pass so tend to just take advantage of what is available there as a default position.

Standard edition most of the time.

I very rarely play a game for an extended time, I usually finish it then move onto to something new. Partly for that reason I very rarely play DLC, even for games I really enjoyed, because it's difficult to jump back in to a completed save and I won't want to play through the base game again just to get to the DLC. Really I'd much rather most DLCs were just released as standalone sequels!

I do like later complete editions that include DLC, if it's a game I haven't yet got round to playing at all. That's different as you have instant access to everything, you're not buying something that is to be released in the future.

Another reason to not buy the upgraded edition for games is that often the "bonus" content makes the game worse by breaking the game's balance. Too often the extras are things like bonus weapons or xp boosters, both of which change the experience from intended (although sometimes it's worse and the opposite with those things taken out of the base game).

Buying anything at launch these days feels like a total con. You end up playing a product that's going to be patched to make it better for months down the line, so you're initial experience will be a suboptimal one, then you'll end up shelling out more for additional content down the line. You're much better off waiting a year or two (or maybe more) and waiting for some complete version with all the extra content to go on sale for £10 and get the final complete game for a fraction of the cost people were paying for a broken version on day 1.

Nintendo games are not immune from this any more. Generally they're about a generation and a half behind the trends, so you should enjoy it more fully in about a console generation's time.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Do Nintendo still do the god awful Amiibo thing where to access DLC requires you to have a load of useless plastic tat knocking about?

They do have passes and DLC (usually, not always, being decent value for money); but they don't (yet) have the 'confuseopoly' of different editions available at launch for the most part. Although as Winkle says, it may only be a matter of time.

They do indeed. In fact they made it so in Skyward Sword HD you can't fast travel to the sky area without one. :)

Generally just buy the standard versions, I stupidly bought the extra pass for Forza last year, what a waste of money

Of course I’ve bought plenty of DLC for games I’ve enjoyed, likewise GOTY editions which have all the DLC included.

Always the base edition. I'm nearly always sick of a game before it gets to the end anyway.

These days i can't really afford to buy games when they are first released.

The only title i've done that with over the last few years was Hogwarts Legacy, and even then, it was just the standard edition.
