Given how rarely I ever actually finish a title, let alone jump into later DLC, I don't know why I'm so obsessed over buying complete edition bundles later down the line. I guess because it is undeniably better value, and then the DLC is always there if I want it, but I have a lot of unplayed DLC sat in my Steam account. There's also the part of me that feels the need to have the complete thing and not be missing bits.

I got a notification the other day that Snowrunner was on sale for £12 or so, and went to have a look, seemed like my biting point for it. But of course, £12 is just the base game. The version with the 3 year pass, presumably all the content they've released in 3 years since launch, was £50! Way more than I would ever want to spend on a game. I'd spent some time playing this on gamepass back when I had that, so I know this is a game I just want to muck about in, and I'm not fussed about finishing it or seeing everything, but knowing that there's this volume of content there locked behind an additional paywall feels like it's bad value again. Almost like the DLC rather than adding value, to me just diminishes the value of the base game.

My mind has changed over the past few years and I do now agree with this, Knoyleo.

I suspect that more folk take this approach now, Jen - and it could increase as the price ticket for AAA games grows.

Yeah, I think a price hike for Game Pass is definitely on the cards, and PS plus will probably have another before long... :dread:

I read that the new Yakuza game actually locks NG+ behind the premium edition, which is egregious.

I tend to go for bog standard editions if buying on release. Maybe GOTY edition if I'm picking it up a few years later.

If it's a newly released game usually the standard edition just to save money and usually because what's offered in special editions at the start isn't worth it. Not that I like it when they gate off substantial game features in special editions from the start anyway. I wouldn't want to support that.

But later if I see a special edition being not much more expensive than the base version and it has stuff like DLC included then I'll go for it I suppose. If it turns out to be just for a digital artbook or soundtrack though then nah.

Standard edition, usually. But where there is an edition with all DLC included, like The Witcher III for Switch, then I'll go for that instead.

I don't care for all the little knick-knacks and trinkets like pins and stickers that often come with super-duper versions.

If I'm buying something on release day it's usually something I'm pretty excited for so I'll go for the deluxe/collectors edition. Anything after that and it's usually a GOTY edition for cheap whenever I get a bee in my bonnet about wanting to play it.
