There may, just may, be a few fellow sibelius fans out there in grcade land. If so, you owe yourself the following:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... rly_Years/

Just watched the above on i-player via wii. Its a two part documentary from 1984 which someone has quite rightly decided was far too good to sit rotting in a vault somewhere and has dragged out for a re-show. Its a truly outstanding piece of television - the first part is on i-player for the next three nights; the second part will be shown this friday night coming at 7:00 pm on bbc 4.

As well as being an excellent, concise mini-documentary, the camera work, both of the stunning finnish scenery and the in-studio, closely cropped orchestral shots, is outstanding. The musical extracts are excellent, being conducted by vladimir ashkenasy.

An informative and beautiful, both visually and aurally, programme.

Good spot, fella.

Nice to see a thread like this.

All I can think of when I hear "Sibelius" is not his wonderful music but filling out gruelling theoretical exercises in this:

My mum's Finnish and she has mentioned Sibelius in the past... Sadly I'm not into classical music, nor is the forum it seems, so this thread is likely to sink without a trace. :(

I will inform her of this program though, especially as she's not working atm..

Nothing gruelling about using Sibelius, man, it's a strawberry floating joy to compose with.

You should try Grade 8.

I loves Sibelius. Fits right into the dark, dramatic mould I crave from ye olde musique.

I'm more than happy enough that one other forumite was interested - Denster - somehow I really didn't expect much of a reaction !!!

Tell your mum to be quick though - part two is Friday night by which time part one will come down off i-player.

This has always been my scorer of choice (not that I have cause to score these days - this was before I got into sequencing/recording).

Ah, thanks. Set her up with a link to it on iPlayer on the Firefox shortcut toolbar, so she can get to it easily, tomorrow. :)

I like Valse Triste, it's a very sweet tune, but I find his bigger works a bit of a struggle. Finlandia sort of reminds me of Wagner a bit.

I'm more of a romantic, myself. I've got tickets to see Chopin's Piano Concerto no.1 next month. Awesome.

If you're into piano music and want to hear something clever, here's Godowsky's transcription of the minute waltz. If you know/love the original, this is like another thing entirely... Godowsky is the guy that also transcribed chopin's (bloody hard) etudes to be played by one hand. Git.

Glad to see there's a few more interested into Classical than I'd thought!

Sorry to derail - back onto Sibelius. Look up some pictures - he's a scary looking chap!
