Not really, it's just taking a step out of the application process, the actual application.
I was headhunted for my previous job, they basically just call you up to invite you for an interview rather than you applying first.

It's basically a telephone interview / soft skills right from the moment they contact you, if you respond positively they'll invite you to interview and possibly sign you up the same day or do a day trial etc. The recruiters get a cut of your wage / commission and the employer has less hr overheads.

I've been approached for everything from office work (which I took) to 40k Web development (that I never responded to).

You'll want to be upfront about stuff like salary, benefits, start dates location etc as often recruiters will hold back on key info until they believe they have a lead to avoid wasting time. Can be as simple as "how are you" "Yes I am fine thank you how are you".. Not "not to well actually" as I did.

So yeah remember treat each call like a telephone interview they do it to test you on your feet.

I once had a recruiter call me 7 times in one day for an interview I ignored because I had just signed contract, they want to sell the job so reciprocate, and you've pretty much already passed CV check.

Thanks guys as it is a bit much being contacted during working hours and expecting to chat for a good half an hour, so am having to chat in the car on the way to work.

I did find it odd they suggesting two different roles at different places and keeping my options open, and wasn't really looking to move right now anyway.

Just remember in every case you are being sold to, so they get their cut, and their is room to negotiate on salary etc. They are looking to fill the position as soon as possible. So if you are getting hounded, they feel like you are a good fit, or they would not pursue (especially over phone). Play your cards right and you may have a nice opportunity but don't forget it's a transactional conversation, you are selling to each other.

The main reason I ignored the 7 calls a day was because I didn't find out the commute was crazy, 2.75 hours involving train, bus and cycle/walk/run each way, they neglected to point this out to me because they were too busy selling, but I managed to get them up from 20k to 25k and even talk my way out of providing a portfolio.

Always sound keen unless you're really not interest in the work, until you find out all the key info, and of course you can ask to be called another time as most people aren't comfortable discussing that sort of thing at work. Another thing I would do is ask to be e-mailed the job description and salary etc while arranging a callback, so you can do your homework.

Salary negotiation is definitely an option in situations like this, and it's almost always worth potentially rejecting the first offer. I did when it happened to me and they came back with an offer 25% higher 8-)

As GG said, always be keen and always be positive. You can always reject them later on, but you (usually) only get one chance to accept.

Its a weird situation as i am not looking to move as i got an increase, but also recognise i can get paid a lot more in central london. I also don't feel quite ready to make a big move due to wanting a bit more experience and out of loyalty to my company who have been very good to me over the last 3 years. They have given me a lot of time off for exams, and even when i had surgery, so i think it would be morally wrong for me to do such a thing - what do you guys think? Am i being too soft?

Just make sure you keep your options open. It's a good idea to save the phone numbers and names of the good agencies so they're only a phone call away if you decide to move.

And if you haven't already, get on LinkedIN.

Thanks for the help. I only recently got on Linkedin - probably how they got my details. At the end of the day all they want is a fat commission and I am wary of that when they are suggesting various roles to me.

LinkedIn is where I get all my calls.

I don't believe loyalty pays these days. By the time I would have earned a raise the company ran out of money anyway and I had a better paid job on the side in the time I had reduced my hours, now I just do that, which was pretty much offered to me on a plate via email.

At my current work a great guy is just about the retire and been there 9 years I think, they put him down a salary grade and gave him about 3x the responsibility, he is so pissed.

Sickness and exams are things most employers should account for. I think 3 years is a good term, tbh anything over 1 year is good if you have reasons to move on.

You will always have a chance to assess the position and the people at interview.

I was loyal to my current job for the last 5 years, others have been there for 20+ years and turned down better opportunities out of their sense of long term loyalty.
That loyalty was rewarded with "We're outsourcing your jobs to India to cut costs"

Loyalty is virtually never returned in the current job market.

If i get something exceptional then i have to go, but i am not making a sideways move or even one with a small increase unless it was for a top 4 company, which is pretty tough!
