PostJRPG Urge must be quenched!
by Photek » Tue May 19, 2009 10:40 am

I was sitting in front of my xbox lastnight and couldn't think of anything to play, I was just back from training and didnt want anything too stressfull, actiony and/or thinky to do and after deciding against Sniping in CoD:WaW in CTF I found Lost Odyssey looking at me.

Now I had gotten stuck on this previously so I loaded it up in trepidation and began going through the black caves 'again'. This time I found a way out and onto the next section! I played it for 2hrs straight and then died so all the work I done in those 2hrs was gone [stupid gaps between save orbs].

While sipping a cup of tea and looking at the title screen I decided to give it another shot and I got much further quicker and thoroughly enjoyed myself! Tweaking around all the stats, equipment and rings was fantastic and it fired up the old JRPG fanatic in me, a feeling that only previously reared its head with FF VII, FF Tactics and FF III.

After going back to the dashboard after finally finding a save orb I was just about to switch off when I seen that there was a Tales of Vesparia Demo up on live! I downloaded it within about half an hour and was smilling from ear to ear playing it. Now, im a little strapped for cash at the moment so I looked up IGN and Eurogamer for JRPG's on the 360 and the only ones of any note that suit my tastes where, Vesparia, Lost Odyseey and Eternal Sonata!

Since ES has been out for nearly 2yrs I decided that im gonna go looking for it in bargain bins and I actually can barely wait! Its only 19yoyo on Play.com if I dont find it but I need to play this game pronto, I've been watching vids all morning and reading reviews! At the time of its release I didn't feel in the JPRG mood but now im going mad for it. I figure that with my limited game time, I can get into this and Lost Odyssey over the coming months and then pick up Vesparia in a year or so for a bargain!

Whats Eternal Sonata like lads and have you ever just gone genre mental and started back cataloguing your collection to suit your new found love?

EDIT: If you have a 360 Elite I'd advise putting LO onto your HDD as it literally quarters the load times!

I enjoyed ES a lot, not more then Blue Dragon or Lost Od midn you. But certianly got a play through out of me (just oculdn't bring myself to go through again)

Excellent music, lovely graphics and a good battle system. never got into the plot or characters really, but deffinatly worth the asking price tbh

edit - in regards to isntalling LO; I would deffiantly agree on this. Not mainly due to loading, but the sheer amount of freezing a slow down I had on disc 4 which ended up making one battle last an hour. Installing cut all of that out and made it run a lot smoother

Lost Odyssey winds me up something rotten. It's a vindictive, quite unforgiving game. I'm still inclined to persist with it, but it's a bugger.

I'm concentrating far more on The Last Remnant, which is at least manageable, even if I don't really have much of a clue what's going on, as well the almost complete illegibility of the p*sspoor menus on my CRT TV. Still, of all the 360's JRPG's TLR seems to have emerged my favourite. Perhaps it's easier than the others, I dunno. I like turn-based RPG gaming and although I'm not too happy about the idea of 'unions' as opposed to managing individual characters, it'll do.

But that's the problem, really; with the exception of D&D:Tactics on PSP, every TB-RPG I have on any platform has been a makeshift 'it'll do' sort of thing.

Nobody has yet made what I'd call a 'perfect' TB-RPG which ticks all the right boxes.

The Last Remnant's quite the undderated role-player, I reckon. Granted, I only played about six hours of it, but I liked what I saw, technical issues aside.

The PC version's reportedly much better, too.

I did notice a huge drop in the little pauses and freezes in the battles after installing too, its like they hadn't time to optimise the discs or something!

Hmm..might play the Demo tonight to see if I like it. Its still 30+yoyo though so won't be getting it anytime soon.
