Seriously you need to come of your high horse. I think the lack of air up there is hurting your brain.

He made a joke about rape and other terrible things that happen to cows, but yeah I've got a problem for taking issue with it.

Moggy wrote:And yet you eat meat and I imagine dairy products as well.

I don't have dairy, again not that it'd change anything I said to Preezy. People can eat dairy to sustain themselves, or meat, or whatever, without making hilarious rape "jokes".

It's not rape.

I don't particularly want to open this can of worms but the hostility towards veganism is mind boggling.

Veganism is fine. Suggesting chickens are oppressed and cows are raped and subject to abduction is moronic.

Lucien, what the strawberry float are you doing?

Pancake wrote:I don't particularly want to open this can of worms but the hostility towards veganism is mind boggling.

It's an odd thing for people to be hostile towards, I think it's more vegans themselves that people who are hostile have a problem with. I do get that vegans who believe consumption of animal products is morally wrong will want to convince other people they should feel the same, but at the same time, people don't like being told they're evil whilst tucking into their bucket of slaughtered poultry.

Also relevant to this conversation, I think more people need to watch the Simon Amstell film, Carnage on iPlayer, about a future Britain that's gone totally vegan, and how older people deal with their meat eating past.

I'm not hostile to veganism or vegetarianism. I couldn't give a crap what other people eat or don't eat.

Where hostility comes in is when people are preaching at other people's dietary choices. Or worse when they are comparing it to rape and child abduction.

The hostility towards vegans stems from their 'holier than thou' attitude and 'self righteous shite that they spout and their willingness to take offence. I don't think it's against all vegans. Just that particular brand of vegan. You know - like Lucien.

I've never seen people get as literal as they do when it comes to using certain words with animals. I'm calling it rape - the rape of an animal. But maybe you'd prefer artificial insemination because you want some social element added to the other word. Whatever - artificial insemination for milk production is still very bad.

I used the word oppressed and people hate that too, but controlled by force isn't much better. Instead of calves being abducted from their mothers they're removed by force. Changing those words (not that I would, I agree with vegans in their word usage) doesn't change the reality, and people know what the reality is, so I don't get all the "that word's only for humans though".

Why do you engage in cannibalism 4 out of 7 main meals a week?

That seems to be the standard excuse but it seems a bit rich to accuse someone of being easily offended whilst simultaneously being annoyed at them for having the audacity to express their views.

Why are people calling Lucien a vegan, when he clearly isn't, because he eats flesh.

Cows aren't 'raped' because they aren't capable of thinking about concepts like liberty or dignity or consent. Cows might feel uncomfortable or sore but they don't feel 'violated' in the way a human rape victim would. Dairy farmers plainly aren't 'rapists'.

You are using deliberately provocative and emotive language to draw a comparison between the worst crimes in human society and the process of farming. But those comparisons are untenable, because the words you use - 'rape', 'oppression', 'child abduction', 'murder' - carry power for us because of the strength of the negative emotions of the victims, and there is no reason to suspect a cow or a chicken have similarly emotive experiences.

sowing crops is raping the earth because the earth can't consent to having you put your seeds in it

Expressing views is fine, basically saying someone is a murderous rape supporting child abducted is different.

If people want to be vegan fine, if you want to talk about it fine. But don't push your views in others and suggest their way of life is wrong because you have chosen to not eat meat.

It's no better than Jehovah's witnesses etc that come knocking preaching they are saved because they believe in some made up bullshit.

I eat meat I want to, you eat kale or whatever because you want to, I don't give a monkey's what you eat so leave me to my diet.

I do however tame offence and will mock morons that think farming chicken is oppression and that milk production is rape and child abduction.

If you are asking why people are suspicious or dismissive of vegans, I think it is down to them being quite pushy. Veganism is the same as every other life philosophy & religion -- I don't care if you follow it, but I don't want to be preached to.

To put it another way, I get annoyed at evangelical Christians, vegans, and people who go running every other day for the same reason -- they won't shut up about how much 'better' it makes them or their lives.

Meat isn't crack cocaine, you can just stop eating it you know.
