This is what I don't understand either. I've seen plenty of successful companies using Kickstarter but I suppose it is just to avoid any kind of risk of a product not selling well. Seems a bit off though.

It can't look good for investment later that they have just Kickstarters everything and never taken any risk of any kind.

Wrestling with pixels, a book about the history of wrestling games (oh I am a nerd).

2013 Kickstarter pegged for 2014 still not out, I checked the campaign page just now and boy people are mad.

I do a few patreons for bonus podcasts/videos and it's much less risky to the man on the street who wants to support creators.

I think some larger companies use it as a way to test market interest without having to actually pay for any kind of market research.

I've only ever backed two projects on Kickstarter.

The first was Underworld Ascendant by Otherside Entertainment which was originally due to release the end of last year but is likely to be out toward the end of this year or early 2019.

The second was the System Shock remake by Nightdive Studios, not sure when that was originally due but they basically messed up by trying to turn it into a whole new game rather than the straight remake that was pitched. They seem to have realised their mistake and are aiming to give people what they originally backed but it's going to be pretty late.

To be fair in both cases I backed to just give the project the chance to exist and couldn't really care less whether they delivered on time - particularly in the case of Underworld Ascendant as Otherside are the closest thing we're likely to get to Looking Glass Studios ever reforming

Toe Jam & Earl, backed in early 2015, and was due later that year, still nothing

To be fair I have done 8 games, and all the other 7 were delivered, probably 3 I would say I was genuinely happy with 3 are okay, and only Carmageddon was a bit gooseberry fool

All of the crowdfunding I've done is working out. There have been a couple of delays (something like a year on this game cover album I'm waiting on), but they're all extremely transparent about what's going wrong and why so I'm not too fussed. This is also the 4th album from this guy I've pushed for so I trust him enough to deliver.

I'd be pissed off if the devs weren't putting out an update every month or two to keep people in the loop, but as long as we know what's happening then I understand.

You lot have got too much money to spare. I can't get my head round the principal of crowd funding at all.

I did Carmageddon. I quite enjoyed the game, it needed more polish but felt a lot like the originals which was enough for me. However I paid extra for a physical copy of the game and other rewards none of which I've received yet despite the game itself being out for a couple of years now :?

I also backed toejam and earl and whilst it's long overdue they've been good at keeping backers updated. It's due this year I think and is also coming to consoles. The game itself seems to have expanded beyond its original scope.

Ive never backed a video game, Ive only backed board games and there hasnt been any mega delays. Having said that the worst one I have been part of is happening right now, Star Realms Frontiers was supposed to deliver before Xmas and its still not delivered. The last update says that everything is being printed and sent to fulfillment cetres so shipping should be pretty close though.

What actually happens if they do just disappear and don't do anything? Like do they have to report Kickstarter every so often or once they have the money could they just peg it?

They can basically peg it, people have sued certain people over Kickstarter based fraud. I backed Clang which sort of delivered but the deliverable was a tech-demo and was terrible.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
