Kindle Oasis.

How many of you have a Kindle Oasis and do you feel it's value for money?

I've been a kindle user since the start with the first generation kindle then the first of the smaller versions and now 2 versions of the Paperwhite but I honestly can't work out why anyone would pay the frankly insane price for the Oasis even if it is now waterproof.
The Paperwhite in my view is pretty much the perfect device as it has a nice screen and isn't heavy and has a pretty big storage capacity for back issues of The Times that I get for my Dad and I.

So, what am I missing here? What does a £230 (for the base this can be taken to £320 for the 32GB 3G version) that my £90 Paperwhite doesn't?

You can read it in the bath!

It seems the only major difference apart from the waterproofing is audible integration, although you need wireless earphones or speakers to make use of that feature as there is no headphone jack or speaker on the device.

I'm more than happy with the Voyage.

I don't need waterproofing, and I'm not interested in Audible (so also no need for such large storage options). And I dislike the almost-square design of the Oasis.

Have they just released a new oasis? :fp: I had one for my birthday about four months ago.

It’s okay, but it’s not *that* different from the cheap kindle in all honesty. Get one if you’ve got money to burn, if not, stick with what you’ve got.

It seems lovely, but the price is disproportionately high for the tech that is included. Amazon is definitely gouging their most loyal Kindle customers. But a waterproof ereader is perfect for the beach.
Now tablets can display ebooks with white text on black and more people have phones with bigger screens the demand for ereaders seems to have lost momentum. Colour ereaders will eventually come.

I've been waiting for a colour reader for ages now as they keep showing them at trade shows.

I have a paperwhite and it is great. I would like the auto backlight but otherwise it is brilliant.

Would you recommend a Kindle for reading manga?

I've been thinking of getting one but cannot make my mind up about which one...

Some might say that the Kindle Oasis is the best one yet, but my trusty old Kindle is still working so I am just going to roll with it for a little bit longer. The features on the newer Kindles are nice, but they only seem to add them little by little so when I finally do upgrade (my Kindle isn't going to live forever) I ought to get one which feels far more advanced than the one I currently own.

My six-year-old Kindle died a couple of months ago, so I went for the Paperwhite. It's great. The backlight is brilliant; considered going for the very basic one, without the light, but I already use it all the time.

Every time they bring out a new, fancy Kindle I get very tempted. I genuinely think Kindles are some of the coolest tech around, they are such a well-thought-through idea and implemented with such a high level of polish. But... when it comes to reading books I always end up browsing in a bookshop and then buying them in paper form. :fp: I guess I'm afflicted with object fetishism.

I got myself a Kindle years ago but found reading novels on it an oddly gooseberry fool experience and have been buying books instead.

Comics are the other way round though. Won't buy any physically now because they last a five minute read and are substantially cheaper digitally.

Do they have expandable memories?

I put the first couple of Berserk volumes on my old Kindle with a mange converter app a few years ago and it worked well, but since then I've only gone for physical editions or the high seas for my manga needs.

Amazon released a manga edition of the Kindle paperwhite in Japan which featured faster page loading and 4 times the memory. If you're planning on reading a lot you'll want something with a lot of storage or an expandable storage option which I don't think the current range of Kindle's offer.

I use a Chromebook to read manga on. You can fold the keyboard back and use it like a table and it has a 9 hour battery life. Don't need another device in my life and also I'm broke.
