Look who's Back - 9/10

German comedy about the return of Hitler. Very intelligent movie and very funny. From satire to farce and back again. Wonderfully German and smarter than most comedies. Very strong ending too.

Highlight has to be a scene in a car with a dog.

Nocturnal Animals 9/10 Woah, that was pretty intense viewing. The highway scene is among the most gut-wrenching I've seen in quite some time. The sense of dread and helplessness, it's not often I feel like that while watching a film. How did Jake Gyllenhaal avoid being given all of the awards for his performance in this? The man was strawberry floating robbed. Aaron Taylor-Johnson too as a matter of fact. At least Michael Shannon got recognition for his role. That man continues to do no wrong.

Those opening credits, though. :dread: :dread: :dread: Jesus strawberry floating christ. The movie should come with a warning, it was repulsive.

It's a scary movie as although played for laughs, it shows how easily people could be tempted into voting for Hitler again. :dread:

I think real life in the past 12 months has showed how easily people could be tempted to do that.

Imagine knowing nothing about it and watching it in a cinema  :dread: Thought it was a brilliant film overall though.

John Wick 2 8.5/10

Got to say, after all the hype, it doesn't live up to the first for me. I think a big part of it is revisiting past locations, I don't want to say rehash but at times it felt like that. Some of the great bits in the first were discovering the hotel, the characters but this felt more like a safe sequel. Dare I say, it wasn't paced as well given th longer run time. Don't get me wrong the action is phenomenal, seriously go see it in the cinema, it's a film that needs to be heard. It's just, it feels like John Wick 1.5. How they set up for the third film though has left me salivating....

I did warn all of you about the opening credits when it was in the cinema  :dread: :dread:

Have to agree about John Wick. It was a bit of a letdown for me. Some of the action is incredible, but then on the other hand there's only so many times you can watch him shoot a stream of anonymous men in the chest then the head over and over again.

I know he is famed for his wooden acting, but I felt like Reeves was actually caricaturing himself at times... pretty much whenever he had lines .

Moonlight - It's very worthy, well acted, well made and all that, but I think it suffered from an underdeveloped plot. The ending was as anticlimactic as they get and I left the cinema thinking what the strawberry float was the point of that then? Still, I enjoyed it for the most part. 7/10.

Hold on, sorry, there's been a mistake, Blue Eyes actually watched La La Land and just typed the wrong film title.

John Wick Chapter 2 7/10 Not as good as the classic action films, nor is it as intense as recent foreign action films such as The Raid, but it's a lot of fun to watch. Loved one set piece in particular which will hopefully carry into the inevitable chapter 3.

Hard Eight 7/10 The first Paul Thomas Anderson film, and it reminds me of the Coen Brothers first film 'Blood Simple' in a lot of ways. The ideas are there, it's entertaining but rough around the edges.

Moonlight 9/10 The three character structure, music and visuals really made this. Can see why it won the Oscars.

OAP, obese ,full-frontal naked cheerleaders for about 3 minutes straight.

It's part of the lead character's art exhibition.

Logan

God tier.
An emotional rollercoaster and I can comfortably sit this one next to the likes of The Dark Knight.

Logan - 10

Just.... Wow. I was expecting it to be good, but not THAT good. It's the Wolverine movie we've all wanted. Jackman finally gets to put some real depth into the character. The actress playing the girl is fantastic from start to finish. They finally get to show us what Wolverine can do, unburdened by a PG-13 certificate. The violence is extreme but feels totally right. Someone with foot-long blades sticking out of his hands is going to leave a bloody mess in his wake and this does not shirk from that at all. It also retro-actively makes every other X-Men universe movie look like a Saturday morning special. It's mature, dark and utterly fantastic. I'm going to have to watch it again a few times to see how it holds up to multiple viewings, but this might just be the best comic book movie I've ever seen.

If I'm reaching for something to critique, and I mean really reaching, the swearing does feel a touch gratuitous at times. Hearing Professor Xavier curse like a sailor is a little weird.
