Didn't Sausage Party get pretty decent reviews across the board? I've not seen it yet though.

Dunkirk - 9/10 As a cinematic experience it was amazing. No idea how it will translate watching at home (unless you have a ridiculous sound system) but the sound in the cinema was pretty spectacular. An eerie and isolated movie.

The Nice Guys - 7/10 - Very fun. I know some people here mentioned it ages ago so I finally got round to watching it. There were a fair few laugh out loud moments too.

It was just the swearing, not the subject matter that annoyed me. It was excessive and undermined their attempt at humour.

I usually like immature movies that swear for the sake of it, but Sausage Party forgets to add jokes to that. Or maybe they were trying to put jokes in but failed horribly.

The song at the start was ok though, so they get 0.5/10 for that.

Shin Godzilla (2016) - 9/10

After a year of waiting I finally got to see the lastest Japanese Godzilla movie is from Toho Studios on the big screen.

Sadly there with not be another Japanese Godzilla film released until after 2020's Godzilla vs King Kong due to licensing agreements.

This was basically a modern version of the original Godzilla movie set in present day Japan. The director also made the two Attack on Titan live action movies and this is very clear in the desgin of Godzilla, looking less serpentine and more demon sent to destroy everything.

The film had a district 9 feel in early parts due to the way it's shot and the focus on one small character. The plot itself is very interesting as a natural disaster hits Japan and as the government and press try to explain it more things happen leading to the reveal of a creature. Unlike other Godzilla movies he doesn't appear as Godzilla at the start but instead a much smaller and stranger creature, as he is attacked and retreats he evolves leading to the best Godzilla reveal and arrival scene ever. Supremely creepy, unstoppable and surprising.

The rest of the movie is a ton of political chatter and Godzilla showing off how he can destroy a city in one night.

It a beautifully shot movie, amazing soundtrack and effects and some of the best Godzilla moments yet. It's easily in the top 5 Godzilla movies of all time.

A hard movie to track down but well worth a look for fans of giant monsters.

This. If nothing else you need to at least watch the very final scene. It's utter madness and still managed to shock me even in today's world of crazy internet content.

Atomic Blonde - 8/10

Not John Wick levels of amazing but a strong story, great cast, the girl from the new Mummy film being sexy and French and a very brutal fight scene in the middle. Soundtrack is a solid 10, 80s electo pop heaven.

This is the impression I got from the trailers, there's only so many times you're allowed to swear as a punchline...maybe once or twice in a film but it shouldn't be your crutch

The Waling - 6/10; highly engrossing and kept me on the hook until the end, but I needed more closure and definitive answers.. Gorgeous scenery and thought the daughter played an excellent role.

Special Correspondents - 0/10 - atrocious and embarrassingly bad. Don't think I laughed once, the film conceit was worse than an episode of Allo' Allo. Gervais literally plays the same down trodden character in everything, just when I thought nothing could be worse than the David Brent feature

Valerian, and the city of a thousand planets 6/10

The CGI in this is quite marvellous. Probably the most impressive thing about the film. The opening 5 minutes are fantastic too and the Big Market sequence is worth the price of admission for its spectacle and straight up weirdness alone. The rest of the scenes on Alpha are visually stunning and have some truly unique sequences within. The story is fine, if obvious, and the acting is generally on the dodgy side (with Rihanna being the sole impressive performance, amazingly)

Saying that, this would have gotten at least another point, maybe two, if Valerian hadn't been the worse lead character I'd seen in a movie. The guy is a banana split, a misogynistic broflake who straight up sexually harasses his partner from the start to the very end of the movie. His presence actually degrades the characters around him, turning his superiors into ignorant fools and his partner into a weak willed simperer. He's genuinely awful.

It's not unfun however.

Logan Lucky looks pretty good.

Luc Besson in a nutshell there. Doesn't help that Dane DeHaan turns everything he touches to gooseberry fool.

Atomic Blonde

A visually striking and stylish spy action story set against the backdrop of the fall of the berlin wall. Great use of colour, soundtrack and gnarly fight scenes (not forgetting the lesbian sex ) but the plot loses itself fairly quickly. It seemed to be caught between wanting to be a serious espionage thriller and going over the top, unable to decide which way to; not glib enough to be the man from UNCLE but too flashy for John Le Carre-esque intrigue.

Well worth a watch but not something to come back to again and again.

Atomic Blonde 710 - Not as good as I expected, the plot was overly convoluted and the motivations weren't clear enough. I liked the gritty actions scenes, I thought Charlize Theron was very good in it and I liked the backdrop.



They were also conducting market research about the film at the cinema I went to so I got to fill in a form with my opinons.

One of the trailers before hand was for The Snowman which looked very good.

Get Out - 8/10 Not quite what I was expecting!

Zootopia - 7/10

Pretty good, but very heavy handed with the REALLY SUBTLE race subplot.

Main bunny character wasn't as hot as the Caramel one, sadly.

The Beach 5/10

Somewhere along the line I'd convinced myself I loved this. I think it had something to do with the soundtrack, which is god-tier most of the time and the fact it really, really reminds me of my time travelling (especially heading off into the jungle to find the Big Cat sanctuary which was so well documented in the relationship thread).

But no. It's pretty, pretty shite and easily Boyle's worst. The first half is fine, but DiCaprio gives a career worst performance in the second half as he supposedly descends into his own mind. The bit with the faux Gameboy graphics remains one of the worst sequences ever put to film. They completely welshed out on the ending too. (in the book the remaining Beachers have a blood orgy and rip apart the bodies of the killed trespassers in a drug addled rage. In the film they...all go home).

So no. A load of shite that reminded just how good a song Pure Shores is.
