Lego Batman - 10/10

Seen it multiple times but it improves on each viewing. Actually a perfect family film. The scene on the batwing when Batman makes a jump to save someone and the music kicks in.... Wow. As good as any Batman being Batman moment in film.

Blade Runner 2049 9/10

Though maybe I'd give it a 10 on a second viewing I don't know, need to let it sink it. Amazing film though. I preferred it to the original a lot more. Incredible cinematography and soundtrack. Gosling was excellent, great story. Ah so happy!

So, I watched the original blade runner again (after watchingthe latest one) and I did view it with a kinder eye.

I still don’t hold it in the esteem others do and never will but given the era it was made and technical limitations then - the breadth of its vision and scope and its influence on its genres and on filmmaking in general - it deserves its place among the greats. I still think its mythos and nostalgia have added to its allure and there are several flaws but still very good.
Still prefer TDK by a mile of course.

I’m planning on seeing it again.

Oh and I saw it on IMAX. It was loud but that added to the experience for me. The sound design on this is wondrous.

Kong: Skull Island - 8/10

Thoroughly enjoyed this, thought the 70's Vietnam setting worked really well and the monsters (and Kong) were nicely done - the wingless pterosaur things were genuinely menacing.

Yes but a slight one and that wasn’t fully realised until the umpteenth number of edits came out.

First one wanted it to be ambiguous.
Scott claims he wanted obvious fro the start but his initial cut didn’t do this and he’s the worlds foremost revisionist.
Ford stated that he played it as Deckard was not a replicant at all. No ambiguity.

I think different cuts and fan theories have greatly added to the mystique of this film.
Scott more than any other director needs different cuts to add to his original offering.
Except in his actual masterpiece of course.

I watched whichever version is on Sky, it was stop start during a night shift so admittedly not the ideal viewing experience. The only thing I could see that would make him a replicant was when he was sitting at the piano looking at photo's. Other than that I couldn't understand why he was so much weaker than the others if indeed he was also a replicant.

Agreed, Gladiator is peerless.

Blade Runner works better if Deckard isn't a replicant. The whole point is that the replicants are in many ways more human than humans and so the ending loses its power if Deckard is a replicant.

Also Scott is a bit of a hack who has made great movies despite himself

Just saw Batman Vs Superman. Comfortably the worst thing I’ve seen in a long long time. It just got worse and more bloated and awful as it went on. Any small redeeming features (no, affleck was not one) actually made me hate it more.

Snyder? What a strawberry floating joke of a director.

The Foreigner 8/10

I enjoyed that a lot. I can see a lot of audiences outside the UK/Ireland getting a little confused at times though.

I accidentally acquired the extended 3 hour cut. I nearly expired twice but goddammit I finished it. Like eating big pieces of glass with 'Martha' etched into them.

That’s the one I watched. I can’t think of a single sequence I want to see again.

Lion - 8/10

A very good film. The fact it's based on a true story is actually pretty damn amazing. The acting was good all round, especially the little kid. The first part was brilliant, and really sucked me in to the poverty stricken side of India. It really gave a sense of being lost, alone and ignored in a huge city. An emotional film that I didn't know a lot about, but certainly worth watching.
