A Christmas Horror Story.

Surprised at how good it was. Some tense moments. Well worth a watch at this time of year.

I watched several good documentaries on Netflix the last few days:

Uprising Valley - Goes through the history of rock climbing at Yosemite. Is very well presented and entertaining, with lots of incredible climbing shots. 8.5/10

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats it's Young - This documents one of the world's toughest ultramarathons. In it's first 25yrs only ten people completed the 100+ mile course. The real entertainment here comes from the race creator who is quite the (evil) character. 8/10

Meru - Follows three experienced climbers attempting to be the first to reach the summit of Meru. To say much more would spoil the experience but there are quite a few unexpected turns and it's a really human drama. 8.5/10

Salt - that plot was utterly strawberry floating nonsensical. Angelina Jolie's cool though.

Justice League - 7/10

A few things
1) It's NOT that bad.
2) Wonder woman is in a lot more than I had been lead to believe. In fact, she was amazing yet again.
3) The storyline progresses just fine. Steppenwolf is ok as a baddie. Bit easy to beat.
4) it could have been a lot worse but it also good that it doesn't copy Marvel's method. Warner Bros clearly has to get some kind of rhythm going with all of its characters as it jars to have different actors for the same role in TV-land.

Daddy's Home 2 - 6/10

It's ok and has a strong ending. The Christmas setting helps a lot though. It's hugely homophobic and male affection is the butt of most of the jokes. Just enough laughs to make it work but not worth over thinking as it has some very odd choices. Would have benefited massively from being a 15 or 18 as lack of adult humor kills many of the set ups.

Wonder Woman – 6/10

I didn’t think much of this. It was better than Man of Steel and Batman v Superman (I haven’t seen Justice League) but that’s not really saying much. ;)

Gal Gadot was great and Chris Pine was decent but the story didn’t grip me and I just ended up watching it for the sake of it.

Molly's Game

Jessica Chastain has her magnificent cleavage on show throughout the entire thing. That's all I could really pay attention to.

Paddington 2 - 9/10

Not seen the first and it's all so very British and twee that I thought I would hate this. But I went along and wow, it's bloody charming, some of the shots are lovely and like a story book come to life. The plot is interesting, effects are not noticable and the cast is excellent. The cameos are particularly good.

An genuinely lovely movie that even gives Hugh Grant a chance to shine as someone other than bumbling prat.

Probably the closest I've seen a movie get to a film for all the family. Bring on Paddington 3

I'm a fan of all of the early Tom Hanks comedies. The Money Pit is also a personal favourite.

One thing I can say is when watching it I felt it was a cult film and I tend to rate them a bit higher for being... cool and... they give me a warmer feeling. Especially if I like someone in it like Tom Hanks, and I liked Corey Feldman but I thought he was in it more.

Maybe I'd give it a 4 or 5 at a push, and I can get why people would really enjoy it. I really enjoy some films others think are crappy. Basically we may disagree but I understand you!

As for Star Wars - there is a big minority I feel out there who do hate TFA. Most on GR seem to really like it though.

I think to compare TFA to AotC is blasphemy though, the prequels were unequivocally dogshit in every respect. Zero redeeming features (except for the music, I guess).

Force Awakens is like a million miles better than the prequel trilogy.

TFA beats the whole prequel trilogy because it has actual characters.

Cinema Paradiso. Loved this. No idea how it has taken me so long to see it.

Very heartwarming and gentle. Loved the priest censoring the films.

(imagine watching 4-7 with three Death Stars and two near identical films).

But we didn't watch 4-7 with three Death Stars and two near identical films, there were 32 years between VI and VII, and three so-so films.

Yes Force Awakens had a lot of the same beats of A New Hope but it was purposefully done, to re-introduce the audience to the Star Wars universe. I think it was different enough, and set enough up for the future, that it's not a fair stick to beat the film with. If The Last Jedi ends up being similar to The Empire Strikes Back then I would agree it's a fair argument.

We're talking about it like the two films are identical. Obviously the climax is pretty similar but elsewhere there are huge differences between the two films. It's a reprise, not a remake.

I think you need to watch the prequel trilogy again. Aside from the first (which I maintain works as a kids film and is pretty good fun throughout) they're awful jumbled messes. The second in particular is just dreadful, convoluted and boring.
