Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - 7/10

It was funny at some part but the overall was just good. The original film was miles better and Robin Williams was legend.

IT - 90s original - my god it's aged badly. Almost unwatchable and so very made for tv.

The Thing - 11/10

New Blu Ray release by Arrow Video, a new 4k restoration of the original negative they say. It looks beautiful, sounds beautiful and is a perfect film. Literally faultless. Casting has never been bettered, amazing ending and the effects are easily the best practical effects ever seen. After Dawn of the Dead (1978) it's my most watched and most loved movie.

Dunkirk - 7.5/10

A decent film it was.

Star Wars TLJ- 8/10 At times felt like a Marvel film with any serious moment punctured by levity. I feel that it doesn't take full advantage of the world created to make a great film but it's good enough. Thor Ragnarok is still my Blockbuster of the year.

Jumanji 2- 6/10

I mean it was fine but that's it.

The Last Jedi- 8.5/10

It was delightful.

Beauty and the Beast (2017) - 5/10

I thought it was a load of overblown, overacted wank. But Gaston was pretty good.

Free Fire - 7.5/10

I have really enjoyed all of Ben Wheatley’s movies and this was highly enjoyable. Very simple and basically all in one location but the action was good and it was amusing.

Blade Runner 2049 - 10/10

My second viewing, it’s a strawberry floating masterpiece.

Jumanji - welcome to the jungle. 7.5/10. Good film, worth a repeat viewing when it’s on tv. You won’t feel disappointed if you pay to see it in the cinema. Cast really seemed to gel well together. Good story as well.

Weak characters.
Shite plot.
Boring action/fight scenes.
Lacking the sense of scale of the previous films.
Dull settings.
Hilariously unconvincing, crowbarred-in love story.
Dreadful plot holes (of which there are several).
Lacking anything original (original and good, at least).

Edit - Okay, I was trying to quite BOR’s ‘can’t wait to see Star Wars’ and ‘what a disappointment’ posts there but Tapatalk won’t let me.

I can't bring myself to watch this because The Force Awakens basically put the final nails in my "love for Star Wars" coffin. I did see Rogue One on a flight earlier in the year and found that much better than TFA. Back in the days of the original trilogy I thought Star Wars was amazing (although I was only 7 when Star Wars came out). When the next 3 followed, the magic I experienced as a kid was no longer present.

A few years back I watched the original 3 on Bluray and found the acting and dialogue to be quite poor.

I don't think there is any coming back....

Darkest Hour - 4/10, boring shite but worth a watch for Oldman's superb performance.

I love that scene in The Force Awakens where they are firing the weapon. The fella doing the speech is ridiculously awesome in that scene.

Last Jedi - 7/10

It was enjoyable enough. People expect too much from star wars films. They're not the best films ever, they're just entertaining sci-fi films.
This one was too, maybe not as good as the originals, but certainly better than 2 out of 3 of the prequels.

The Void - 2016 - 9/10

Lovely 80s John Carpenter style horror movie. Well worth picking up. Best small horror movie I've seen for ages.

Rogue One

Man, this is a hard film to assess. THe final half-hour is great entertainment and makes up for a pretty boring hour in the middle. I liked the styling and most of the presentation but I found the main characters to be so dull and I think that's due to the script rather than acting ability.

The lead character, Jyn Erso, barely seemed to be alive throughout the film; this was a it terrific opportunity to see a female lead in such a popular movie franchise but I feel that the story and the lines have let her down. Jyn's main supporting character, Cassian Andor, fares slightly better although, again, the script is pretty mediocre. My favourite characters were the blind Jedi guy amd the ex-Imperial robot who assisted them.

There are some nice touches; the costumes and scenery are neat and Vader steals the show with a genuinely iconic presence. The surprise digital appearances by Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher turned out far better than I would have anticipated.

I did enjoy the film although, for me, that is due mainly to the exciting action in that final thirty minutes and the well-done links to the original film.

6/10. Better than the prequels but not up to The Force Awakens.
