Watched it on a whim and quite enjoyed it, somewhat different from the typical vampire film in that you actually feel sorry for the vampire in question.

*sigh*

It makes me angry every time i remember that movie exists.

I watched The Witch, the three people I watched it with absolutely hated it, one even proclaiming it 'the worst movie I've ever seen!' I can see why people would think that, I imagine many folk laughed all the way out of the cinema. But I thought it was OK.

It's always a little frustrating when you think a movie is heading one way and then it does something totally different, and the idea you have would have been loads better. In this case the setting, tone and overall direction is excellent for the first half, but it just gets a bit silly towards the end. Played straight as a psychological horror and study of religious zealotry it would have been fascinating. But it just seemed to go with the whole 'crazy' route with some imagery that made the film difficult to take seriously. Shame.

Rogue One - 7/10

It was pretty good. Visually very impressive (except for the uncanny valley CGI characters). The opening 10 minutes were a bit of a mess with so many planets getting shown, and some of the characters were a bit rubbish.

The whole thing lacked that bit of Star Wars magic, but it was a story that I was interested in seeing and tied in very nicely with A New Hope.

The Vader bits were really cool, and I'm glad the main characters got vapourised because they were a bit irritating.

Fast and Furious 8

9/10 - never seen a FF movie before this one. It was genuinely excellent, it really is a brilliant and over the top summer movie. The kind that Transformera should have been. Cast is great and the villian actually has both a plan and the balls to do stuff.

Loads of great bits and it's all well filmed.

My only negative and it's a huge one is.., as someone with a limitless card I go to the cinema often and I've seen the trailer for Ff8 at least 10 times. Every Surprise, action set price, moment of tension, last minute save etc is in the trailer. Such a huge shame as going in blind this would have been a true spectacle of a movie.

Well worth a watch as it does what it set out to do. The rock steals show as always too.

I can't.

I'd rather see something original and risky like The Witch than Paranormal Activity 7 etc. Each to their own I guess.

Don't Breathe - ok thriller/horror. Interesting twist on the normal villain, but still feels a bit like you've seen it all before. 6

The Invitation - 10/10

It's on Netflix, if you have Netflix then go and watch it spoiler free as going in blind it's an amazing movie. The general plot is a young American couple go to visit some old friends for a dinner party. Over the course of the evening it's very clear something isn't right..

With a building tension it grows towards a strong ending and a very good last shot. Reminds me of Society (perfect film) and Audition with a general unease throughout the movie. Excellent cast too.

Loved this film and the end shot was amazing !

I think it caught me off guard as i had no idea what the film was about or where it was going.

A Scanner Darkly - 6/10
This was okay. Like most Philip K Dick ideas it's an intriguing one, and while the overall premise was interesting, as was the visual style, it all just felt a bit...pointless. No real story to tell, more a snapshot into a not-very-interesting investigation. There were a few funny moments, but felt very 'meh' overall.

That film portrays exactly what I think goes on in the minds of Robert Downey Jr. and Woody Harrelson

I enjoyed Let the Right One In more tbh. It's the same film more or less, but it was made before American decided to remake it.

How many of the Fast and Furious films are worth watching? I've heard number 2 is pretty dire, so is it worth starting on 3, or perhaps later?

Cruel Summer what a miserable and depressing film.

It's a tough watch :(

Oh I totally agree, I've enjoyed many films that have taken risks but not been wholly successful. Sunshine, for instance is one of my favourite films. I'm just saying not everyone is like that, and certain folk (especially ones who were expecting a generic horror movie) would have found its more arty extremes to be totally unpalatable. Even I balked at the talking goat bit.

I haven't checked IMDB or anything but I imagine there are a fair few 'what the hell did I just watch' type reviews on there for it. As I said, I didn't totally hate it, just that some of it didn't really gel properly for me.

The Wailing - 7/10

Really enjoyed the first 2 hours of this but the last half hour seemed a little bit rushed and the ending was somewhat anti-climatic.

The thing about The Witch is the truly amazing performances of the kids in it. For them to sound so authentic speaking in that antiquated way was a phenomenon. I really liked the film even if it didn't deliver what I was expecting.

3's the worst of the bunch.

If you want to start with a film that's actually good then 5's the way to go.

Think the general consensus is something like

5>6>7=1>4=2>3

There's no real coherent plot throughout the series though so personally I'd just watch 5 and 6, then 7 if you enjoy those two.

The first one is surprisingly watchable still, its cheesy, badly acted and cringe inducing but there's something appealing about it.

I've only ever seen the 7th one and it made me want to punch myself in the head until I passed out and/or died.

The Neon Demon. - 2/10

It's trying so hard to be something special but has nothing going on. A pretty cast, good music and some nice shots don't make a movie. Even the talked about shocking scene was dull.

Just boring and without any merit.

Because you knew you'd reached the pinnacle of life in that moment?

Watched f8 tonight, it was all that I wanted it to be. Ridiculously, unbelievably, monumentally stupid. Terrible acting. Gaping plot holes. Millions upon millions blown on ludicrous special effects. But strawberry floating fun. 9/10
