Vile?

He hits people.

I'm not one to get up in arms about films and their depictions of things as I get that it's all escapism but I find the Scott Pilgrim character abhorrent. It's a whiny film about a whiny man who never *really* takes any responsibility for his stupid, hurtful actions. He cheats on two people and at the end of it not only does he get the girl he was after, but the other one almost seems to act like it's her fault this happened in the first place. There are no consequences to what he does. In fact, the thing he is supposed to learn is self respect, which is great except he hasn't shown any respect to any other character throughout the film. Perhaps that's the point, I dunno, but it isn't portrayed well in the film at all. Even after he learns his life lesson, he is still a bit of a tool.

Neither of the two leads hold a convincing romance and the whole film just has a nasty vibe to it on repeat viewings IMO. The only thing it really has going for it is Knives, who is the only character to actually have a story arc and character growth. Also the Chris Evans cameo.

I thought Scott Pilgrim was a decent enough movie, not wonderful but not crap. I didn’t take much notice of how whiny Scott was though, it certainly didn’t bother me.

And the correct best cameo is Brandon Routh – the greatest vegan ever.

Scott is a whiny child, but it's a comedy film and it's funny. I don't think you're primarily supposed to come out of it with a life lesson.

Although Scott does have a character arc and change for the better by the end of the film. He apologises to Kim, Neil replaces him in the band, and he is finally honest about cheating and apologises to both Ramona and Knives for it, so I think he does take responsibility by the end. He literally loses and gets killed when still fighting to "win" Ramona, and his questionable behaviour gets called out throughout the film, so I don't think the film is trying to normalise or glorify his behaviour.

And yet somehow it manages to, by having there be no consequences for his actions. It’s alright to mess with people’s heads and their lives, to think only of yourself and generally be an arrogant, pig headed person as long as you apologise after you’ve done it. You’ll still get what you want.

Again, I don’t normally get offended by films and their depictions of this, that and the other but SP *really* got up my nose. I think Moggy’s pointed out the real reason why actually - this skinny, whiny little guy manages to single handedly take out Captain America and Superman during the movie.

Completely off topic - while looking up the cast list of this film I found out that Jason Schwartzman’s Mum is Talia Shire. ADRIAAAAAN

The politics in Dredd are also incredibly interesting. He's a hero and the good guy, but also a massive fascist operating in a police state.

I actually find Dredd's politics way more interesting than Mad Max's. The fascist element of the character's design creates a lot of potential for great stories.

I agree but I didn't want Taf to label me a sexist :slol:

I'll get you one of these days *fist shake*

But I agree that Dredd is political too. I'd somehow forgotten that the whole point of the character is the argument around means to an end and the meaning of fascism Vs the meaning of freedom. I still think FR is more interesting, but Dredd is juuuuust behind.

Coming soon to “Cora Reviews”:

The Toy Story franchise – Cora will tell us why it is a pile of gooseberry fool because Buzz learns his lesson but Woody is still a banana split at the end.

Star Wars series – Cora gets furious that the galaxy didn’t learn any lessons from the decades of war and allowed the First Order to take over.

Rocky – Cora enjoys this movie, but it left a sour taste in his mouth that this man was only defined by how many punches he could take.

Shaun of the Dead – Returning to his hatred of Edgar Wright, Cora breaks down what an absolute dick Ed (Nick Frost) is and how even as a zombie, Ed was only good for playing video games with.

I'm pretty sure that's not the intended message of the film, and it's not how I read it either. It's the same argument as "you can murder and steal as long as you repent and you'll still go to heaven". I guess it comes down to how sincere you see the apologies as.

Scott's really good at fighting. In fairness the comics make a bigger thing about that.

The Incredible Hulk - 6/10

A lot better than i had remembered it to be, it was flawed yes, but the action was pretty decent and it did help lay the foundations for the MCU.

I saw it when it first came out on disc, and i hated it.

Went to see Love, Simon earlier, and actually really enjoyed it. It's pretty standard high school drama, so it's not really pushing the envelope there, but it's like the first *big* film about a gay romance so it's still kind-of interesting, I guess. Has anyone else watched it? :shifty:

It's a good story, though. It's got the girl from 13 Reasons Why in, but she doesn't kill herself this time.

Also it's got some proper really funny bits. Mainly Tony Hale. And the bit where his dad says they can sign up for Grindr :slol:

"It's like facebook for gay people, right?"

★★★★☆

Also I liked Scott Pilgrim but I always thought it could have been a lot better. Mae Whitman

The Killing Of A Sacred Deer - 8/10

Missed this in cinema so was glad to see it being put up on Amazon Prime. Thought it was fantastic. It's genuinely uncomfortable viewing.

The Foreigner -7/10

Pretty good but a bit strange seeing Jackie Chan in a fully serious role, the oirish accents and Pierce Brosnan's "not Gerry Adams at all, honest" character were a little bit stereotypical though.

I echo the dislike of Scott Pilgrim. Character was an annoying twat that everyone else in the film tolerated for...I dunno, guitar skills?

It was also a massively over-designed, ugly mess of a film, so there's that too.

I found it hard to tolerate everyone else in the film too, can't imagine how they came up with such an unlikeable set of characters.

I also hated the music.

I never knew so many people didn't like Scott Pilgrim :(

I'm sad because it's upsetting to see so many people being wrong

But even if you don't like the film, you can probably appreciate how accurately it adapted the comic source material:

I enjoyed elements of the film but I think Cora is bang on. Scott Pilgrim is a thoroughly unlikable character and not good enough to even look at Knives
