It's objectively a well-made film with some decent performances (though I don't get why everyone is going overboard about Frances McDormand's performance - it's far from a demanding role), but I found it to be one of the most mean-spirited films I've ever seen with a serious nasty streak through it. The dialogue isn't as witty as it thinks it is either - it comes across as a bit try-hard - and the plot has hardly any direction at all. It's like a film that was written and directed by David Brent.

Your opinion is your opinion, but using phrases like "try hard" "far from demanding" and "David Brent" around this film is just... mystifying to me. It's like someone telling you that blue is actually red or 2+2= potted shrimp. I'm glad you went to see it, it seems to have done well which, fingers crossed means more similar scripts will be picked up, and I suppose it's always good to see alternative readings to one's own but still.

(I partially agree with your nasty streak comments, but I think this gets resolved more than satisfactorily by the conclusion (which is excellently understated)).

Blade Runner 2049 - well that was 2 hours 36 mins of boring visually it was good but it felt far to dragged out could of made it a 2 hour film. 4/10

Thor: Ragnarok - 9/10

Easily my favourite Marvel film since Guardians of the Galaxy (which it was tonally similar to). Very funny and it had Goldblum in, which is always a winner.

It misses out on top marks as the Asgard scenes let it down somewhat.

Free Fire. 1 hour and 25 minutes of people in a warehouse with guns trying to kill each other incompetently, backed up by no story.6

The worst one of these for me was reading Final Fight is better than Streets of Rage 2, which was deemed average etc. At that I was--no. NO.

Three Billboards

strawberry float me, I thought this was absolutely brilliant. My expectations had been lowered following a few comments in here. An excellent film that I hope does very well at the Oscars.

A complete failure on pretty much every level. Bad is, you know, bad but bad and boring is worse. This is two hours of absolute emptiness with no plot, no drama, no style and no strawberry floating acting. The lead character bobs through the runtime like a dingy lost in a sea of senseless nastiness, meaning the only dialogue comes from the villains, a paedophile and a psychopath the script is bizarrely intent on humanising. Spoiler: it doesn't.

It also contains the worst Chekhov's Gun ever placed in a narrative and one of the most ill-judged turns I've ever borne witness too. It uses strawberry floating paedophilia for shock value in a way that is so utterly tone deaf I'm amazed the actors were prepared to go through with their roles.

The 2 points given are for the nice looking futuristic Berlin, which plays absolutely no part in the proceedings.

Of Netflix's three recent blockbuster blunders this was the most disappointing, and the most reprehensible.

Just caught Ladybird.

I did really like it, but it's uneven. It's a slice-of-life style movie so nothing really happens or changes by the end, but the characters are very well drawn and compelling. It draws on a lot of cut-out teen movie tropes; some of which it subverts, some of which it doesn't, some of which get played so straight it's almost comical and the others that are just brand new takes on the trope. Either way, exactly where each character arc is going is usually interesting.

But it does drag. There's a shot where I genuinely thought 'Ah, roll credits' and then it just carries on and I was like 'Oh strawberry float, are we not done? Because I'm done'.

Soair....Soarie...Sa.... Ms Ronan is brilliant, because she's manages to convey being misunderstood by her similarly misunderstood but horrible mum, played by the one from Roseanne who wasn't Roseanne, whilst also being a selfish idiot teenager. She's neither a hyper pop-culture savvy teen who's just misunderstood by the parents who don't get her, or just an idiot kid, she's a believable realistic balance.

In fact, the whole cast is brilliant (apart from the Dad who isn't bad, but doesn't have any nuance to his character).

Yes, it's pretty good, but being blatant Oscar bait, it's second on most fronts to I, Tonya.

Death of Stalin – 6/10

I was really looking forward to watching this one, but it wasn’t as good as I was hoping. There were funny bits, but overall it just didn’t make me laugh as much as I was hoping.

Jason Isaacs was fantastic though and should have had more scenes.
